School Uniform
Our uniform is a yellow polo shirt, navy blue
sweatshirt and navy blue trousers, joggers or skirt.
Please name your child’s clothing, a lost property box
is kept in Mr Parker’s office.
Attendance/Lining up/Collection
If your child is ill and unable to attend school, please
contact the school office on 0141 959 3247 before
9.00am. If you are going to be late collecting your
child please contact the school office. You must
inform the class teacher, preferably by a note, if you
have arranged for your child to be collected by a
different person.
We ask parents to drop their children off at the gate
so they can line up with their classmates, and collect
them from the gate area. This means the playground
is not overcrowded.
Lunchtime
A cafeteria system operates for children having a
school lunch. Children bringing a packed lunch eat it
in the old gym supervised by Pupil Support
Assistants. If you wish to take your child home for
lunch please inform the class teacher in writing and
collect them from the school office.
Ethos/Playtimes
Our school uses the Golden Rules to help create a
good ethos and children are encouraged to be polite
and well mannered at all times. To support our
Golden Rules and positive ethos we have weekly
Star Pupils, Playground and Good Work Wall awards
and the Class Challenge and Golden Time.
Pupil Support Assistants are in the playgrounds to
ensure play times are happy and safe.

MATHEMATICS
The children will continue to work in groups for
maths.
We cover:
 Number, Money and Measure
 Shape and Position
 Information Handling
 Problem Solving
The children will also spend 15 mins a day on
oral and mental maths.
We use active learning approaches and
published materials, programmable toys,
computer programmes, maths equipment and
concrete teaching materials, television
programmes and audiotapes.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
All the aspects of language are important and
we cover:
 Reading
 Writing
 Talking
 Listening
Oxford Reading Tree continues as the core
reading scheme in P3 and reading groups will
operate in a similar manner to last session. At
the end of each stage of the reading tree the
children are assessed and the majority of
children will have sat their level A national
language assessments before the end of P3.
It is very important for parents to read regularly
with their children. We have a school library.
Each class has a class library and we arrange
visits to the library. All pupils are given
opportunities to read for enjoyment, to develop
their reference skills and to read a variety of
genres.
Functional, personal and imaginative writing
skills are taught in accordance with the Glasgow
Guidelines and we are using a Big Writing
teaching approach including teaching
vocabulary, connectives, openers and
punctuation (VCOP). We use Nelson
Handwriting and Nelson Spelling to support the
teaching of technical writing skills.
Talking and listening skills are covered across
the curriculum and through skills focussed
lessons.
TOPICS
The termly topics this session are:
What a Load of Rubbish – August to October,
for homework the children will carry out a
recycling questionnaire and have a poem to
learn and recite.
Electricity – October to December.
Castles – January to April, the children are
asked to prepare a written project on a Scottish
castle
Our Community – April to June, children are
asked do a project on an aspect of our local
community.
We are using active learning approaches and
play to teach these topics and the children will
learn by making, problem solving, working
together, through play, drama and completing
tasks/challenges.

each week. They will also have daily reading
homework.
We very much welcome parental assistance for
active learning and on class visits. If you would
like to help in school please contact Mrs Coats
or Mrs Mackay and we will explain the
Disclosure Scotland procedures and arrange for
you to join our learning together team.
