Dear Parents and Carers
This letter is to explain the assessment process and statements for your child in KS1 and KS2.

Assessment in KS1 and KS2
In September 2014 a new national curriculum was introduced in English schools. With a new
curriculum in force in English primary schools, how your child’s progress is measured has changed
too.
What is the new primary grading system?
Until September 2014, children’s progress was assessed using National Curriculum Levels. The
government has now removed ‘level descriptors’ from the National Curriculum and schools are
expected to establish their own assessment systems to suit their children and parents.
Please note: Y2 and Y6 pupils will still be assessed using levels at the end of July 2015. From
September 2015, all primary-school pupils will be assessed using the new grading system.
So how are children awarded a grade in the no-levels system?
It is up to individual schools to decide how they assess pupils’ progress. At Singlewell we have
decided to use statements to describe pupils' progress. As well as commenting on whether your
child has made good progress teachers comment on the attitude and behaviour of each child over
the year. We also give details of curriculum areas where they have achieved well and areas that
need more development and support:



Working within the expected level of attainment for his / her age - Expected
Working below the expected level of attainment - Emerging
Working beyond the expected level of attainment - Exceeding
I hope this letter clarifies the reports, if you would like to ask any further questions your child’s
teacher will be happy to answer them.
