Pineapple – Thailand
April,, 2014
April
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volume of raw material during April has still been
limited: 100-250 tons and 300-600 tons per day, were
processed by small / medium size factories and big size
factories respectively. The volume is considered not enough
for each factory during main season and production volumes
remain less than export volumes. Raw material price has
moved up even a bit further from the previous month.
Incoming volume of raw material might be slightly improved
during May-June, when traditional peak comes out. Unless
there will be a bumper crop during summer, raw material price
is expected to remain high as factories are not receiving
enough raw materials to produce for their pending orders.
PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market prices for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 are moving up to USD 1,400 - 1,500 pmt FOB Thailand
for freshly produced PJC from winter crop. PJC stocks from
fresh production are limited especially for aseptic pack as
factories seem to be behind schedule on pending contracts.
This is caused by continuing low volumes of incoming raw
materials during past 6 months. For spot deliveries most
factories could offer only small quantities at non negotiable
price levels. The PJC price is expected to firm further during
coming months, because of unusual low stock levels just
before the start of the low season: July-September.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
Rainfall during April in both South (main pineapple growing
areas) and East areas were limited and well under 10 years
average. Continuously limited rainfall will potentially effect to
pineapple plantations. Temperatures during April in both
areas were higher than the previous month, but considered at
the same level as the 10 years average. In coming 2-3
months, PJC b/a ratio ranges will be on the higher side and
nitrate levels will be decreased due to higher temperatures.

Apr’12 – Apr’14 in major pineapple growing areas
The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, is rising now to over USD 1,500 pmt and
will rise further in coming months as also stocks in Europe
seem to be drying up and offered prices will be more directly
related to the price levels in origin.
