The Connecticut Compromise
By, Erin Connolly
What was the Connecticut
Compromise?
An agreement with the smaller and larger states that in
part defined the legislative structure and representation
that each state would have under the United States
Constitution.
What was the problem
The slave states and the free slave states get into a fight over whether
the slaves should count of as part of the population.
Slaves states wanted the slaves to count in population, so that it will
up the representatives
Non slave states did not want the slaves to count because they did not
own any slaves. The population would be smaller in the north
Why?
Slave states would get more representative if slaves
counted as there population
North wanted to abolish slavery, they didn’t own a lot
of slaves so many people thought that it would be
unfair if the south could count their slaves as
population.
Slaves couldn’t vote
Purpose
South View- The purpose of the Connecticut
Compromise is that the South is able to count the
slaves as the population so that they could have more
representatives
Northern View- The purpose of the Connecticut
Compromise is to stop the south from allowing slaves
to count as the population.
Who proposed the plan? What
was the proposed solution?
The plan was proposed by Roger Sherman and Oliver Ellsworth.
“proposed a solution to the heated debate between larger and
smaller states over their representation in the newly proposed
Senate.” (The Connecticut Compromise)
The bigger states believed that it was fair to have more
representatives because they have more people to be represented
The solution would be is that each state gets an equal amount of
representatives. (2 for each state)
Strengths
Everyone had an equal number of representatives
Some states would have more people but it wouldn’t
matter because the same amount of people went to
represent each state
Made the votes fairer
Today known as the Senate- 2votes per state
Weaknesses
Bigger states had more people to represent but still
only got 2 people to represent them
Only one vote and some states had so many people
that they couldn’t decide what to vote for
Bigger states got effected by this (the south)
