The 1950s ushered in a diversity of fresh, bold artistic styles and
avant-garde associations on both sides of the Atlantic, from the
Abstract Expressionist and Art Informel movements to the Cobra
and Dau al Set artist groups. Artists experimented with unorthodox
materials, techniques and subject matter, and reexamined earlier
art movements. French writer Michel Tapié even declared the existence of un art autre (art of another kind) — a radical break with all
traditional notions of order and composition, in a movement
toward something wholly “other”.
From the Guggenheim Collection. International Abstraction
1949–1960, as the title suggests, showcases a selection of works
from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New
York. For the very first time, works from the core collection of midcentury art from this world-renowned institution are on view in the
Netherlands. In addition to well-known American and European
artists, including the Cobra artists Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel
and Asger Jorn, the exhibition also draws renewed attention to
lesser-known pioneers.
The exhibition focuses on the years from 1949 to 1960, a dynamic
period in which modern art and post–World War II societies were
undergoing radical changes. Europe was rebuilding from the ashes
of war, as the United States developed into a world power. New York
joined Paris as a center of world culture: in both cities, artists were
fervently in search of new, expressive and performative painting.
From the Guggenheim Collection also celebrates a vital time in
the history of the Guggenheim Museum. In 1952, James Johnson
Sweeney was appointed director, and the year 1959 marked the
opening of the sensational Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building.
Sweeney had succeeded Hilla Rebay, who, since 1937, had been
building a museum-quality collection with Solomon R. Guggenheim.
The groundbreaking inaugural exhibition in 1959 included over 120
works. They were partly by important modernists from the collection,
such as Constantin Brancusi and Vasily Kandinsky, but more than
half of the works had been acquired during Sweeney’s tenure. They
included 40 contemporary paintings and sculptures by an international array of artists, clearly demonstrating Sweeney’s commitment
to innovation and the art of his own day.
The Cobra Museum presents works acquired by the Guggenheim
during the 1950s and under Sweeney’s vision. Works added to
the Guggenheim collection through the present day are also included. From the Guggenheim Collection as a whole investigates
the affinities and the differences between artists working on both
sides of the Atlantic in an era of fundamental social, political and
artistic upheaval.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Voor het eerst
wordt een keuze uit de kerncollectie mid-century art van het
befaamde museum in Nederland getoond. Behalve van Amerikaanse grootheden is er werk te zien van minder bekende
internationale pioniers, en van kunstenaars die aan Cobra deelnamen: Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel en Asger Jorn.
De tentoonstelling richt de blik op de jaren 1949-1960; een dynamische periode waarin de moderne kunst en de naoorlogse
samenleving radicaal veranderden. Europa was zwaar gehavend
uit WO II gekomen. De Verenigde Staten ontwikkelden zich tot
een wereldmacht. Naast Parijs wierp New York zich op als culturele
hoofdstad; in beide wereldsteden zochten kunstenaars naar een
nieuwe, expressieve en performatieve schilderkunst.
From the Guggenheim Collection viert ook een vitale fase in de
geschiedenis van het Guggenheim Museum, met in 1952 de benoeming van directeur James Johnson Sweeney en in 1959 de opening
van het sensationele Frank Lloyd Wright gebouw. Sweeney volgde
Hilla Rebay op, die vanaf 1939 samen met founder Solomon R.
Guggenheim de collectie van het toen nog Museum Non-Objective
Painting had gevormd.
De legendarische openingstentoonstelling in 1959 omvatte ruim 120
werken, met belangrijke modernisten uit de collectie-geschiedenis
van het museum, waaronder Constantin Brancusi en Wasily
Kandinsky. Ruim de helft van de getoonde kunstwerken was door
Sweeney zelf verworven. Uitzonderlijk was het grote aandeel van
40 eigentijdse schilderijen en sculpturen van Amerikaanse en internationale kunstenaars. Hiermee getuigde Sweeney van zijn inzet
voor vernieuwing en de kunst van zijn tijd.
Deze tentoonstelling in het Cobra Museum omvat werken die door
James Johnson Sweeney met een vooruitziende blik in de jaren ’50
zijn verworven. Daarnaast zijn er werken opgenomen die na de jaren ’50 tot op de dag van vandaag zijn toegevoegd aan de collectie.
De tentoonstelling onderzoekt affiniteiten en verschillen tussen kunstenaars die in verschillende continenten werkten in een tijd van ingrijpende veranderingen op maatschappelijk, politiek en artistiek vlak.
