HOW SUCCESSFUL HAS THE UN BEEN AS
A PEACEKEEPING ORGANIZATION
By: Ethan Yang, Jun Hao, Xiang Heng
PALESTINE (1947)
Failure
 What was it about?
 -It was a dispute between Jews and Arabs
-After investigation, UN decided to divide
Palestine, leading to the creation of the Jewish
state of Israel.
 Outcome
 -This was one of the most controversial decision
made by the UN and it was rejected by the
majority of Arabs.
-This led to series of civil wars between Israel
and various Arab states.

THE KOREAN WAR (1950 – 53)
South Korea was invaded by North Korea in
June 1950
 Security Council condemned North Korea
 They sent help to South Korea
 Managed to repel North Korea

VERSUS
Overall, a great success for the UN
 However, it was only possible due to absence of
the USSR
 Very much an American Operation

THE SUEZ CRISIS (1956)
British and French protested and sent troops
when president of Egypt nationalized the Suez
Canal
 This is so as British and French had some shares
of the Suez Canal
 At the same time, Israelis invaded Egypt
 Security Council stepped in and asked British
and French troops to withdraw

They agreed to withdraw if the UN ensured a
reasonable settlement over the canal and kept
the Arabs and Israelis from slaughtering each
other
 Overall it was a great success

HUNGARIAN RISING (1956)









Occurred at the same time as the Suez Crisis
Hungarians tried exerting independence from
Russians
Soviet entered Hungary to stop the revolt
UN stepped in when Hungary asked for help
Russian did not want to withdraw their troops
They refused to co operate and no progress could be
made
UN failed as Russians simply ignored them therefore
nothing could be done
Unlike Britain and France who were willing to bow to
international pressure
FAILED
CZECHOSLOVAK CRISIS (1968)
Failure
 -This was almost a repeat of what happen in the
Hungarian Rising
-Czechs showed, what Moscow felt to be too
independent
-And thus, Russian and other WARSAW pact
troops were sent to enforce obedience to the
USSR
-The security council tried to pass a motion
condemning this action, but Russian vetoed it
-And there was nothing the UN could do, with
Russians not cooperating

THE IRAN – IRAQ WAR (1980 – 88)
Long drawn war between Iran and Iraq
 After years of meditating, UN finally managed to
negotiate a cease fire
 Success, however it could be due to the fact that
both sides were close to exhaustion
