Greetings to all my friends and shipmates:
First, I would like to express to you my sincere apologies for
taking so long to get out another newsletter. It has been a year
since I last wrote and I know that many of you are wondering
what is happening within the organization. So I’ll start by letting you know what went on within the last few months. First,
we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Naval Photography by
participating in the ceremonies recognizing our founder, LT
Walter Richardson, with the naming of Building 1500 in his
honor in January. I hope you got to see the photographs of
both the ceremony and the room dedicated to Naval Photography on the webpage. We followed that up by holding our
annual reunion in the birthplace of Naval Photography, Pensacola, FL in September. One of the highlights of the reunion
was touring building 1500. Although the current space that
they have set aside in the building as a “PH” museum is somewhat small, we have hopes that a larger space is forthcoming.
At the reunion’s general meeting, several items were discussed. First, several of the members thought our web-site
needed to be updated and correct, especially the information
concerning our officers. I have directed that these areas be
addressed and corrected upon completion of the annual election. Regarding the election which was recently closed, I
would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our newly
elected officers who have agreed to serve on the Board of Directors. Jerry Billings has moved up to 1st Vice President replacing Rich “Easy” Ezzell who had to drop off the Board due
to personal reasons. Nora Filos has been elected 2nd Vice President replacing Jerry. Both of these officers will only serve
one year in their positions due to Rich’s exit from the Board.
Sammy Solt has been reelected for another three year term as

Presidents Message cont.
Membership Chairman; Jennifer Miller has been appointed our Newsletter Chairman replacing John Pieroth; and
Rick Rosser has been appointed our site’s Web-Master replacing Ron Mathews who will remain in place until Rick
has worked out several problems with the site. Although I have already sent a congratulatory email to these individuals, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each and every one of them publicly for their willingness to serve and election to the NANP Board of Directors. Once again, we had a low voter turn-out which seems
to reflect our national apathy toward elections. Although the time they will spend leading our association is minimal compared to those officers of large profit making corporations, they are no less important to us. I look forward
to working with each and every one of them in the coming year.
Once again, as at each convention, we had a long discussion on how to increase membership within the association.
Our keynote speaker, CAPT Scott Norr, is currently serving as CHINFO’s Chief of Staff. As an ex-LDO Photographer, he has strong ties to our community and has assured us that he will promote the association within the Mass
Communication Specialist community. Secondly, in an effort to get the association’s existence out to some of the
enlisted personnel who only spent one tour as a PH, I am currently working on an effort to contact all 1,800 plus
sailors who belong to Together We Served and served as a PH. They represent a large portion of single termers
who might be interested in the association. Again, I am asking each of you to also reach out to your shipmates, explain the association to them and how much it means to you. I believe we will find more than a few who have fond
memories of their service as a Photographer’s Mate and aren’t even aware the association exists. If we all would all
just bring in one new member, that new membership could also get the word out even more. It’s a way to ensure
our association survives.
Finally, there was a discussion on whether we should change our name to one that could include other services photographic communities. This isn’t a subject that can be handled quickly or without a great deal of communication.
Quite frankly, although our insignia doesn’t, I believe the current name recognizes both the PH community and the
current Mass Communication community and meets the basic ideals of the association. However, I asked that everyone take time to think the problem out and submit proposals. Any such change would require a membership vote
as a whole and changes to our By-Laws. Please don’t hesitate to contact your board members with your thoughts.
Our webmaster is collecting Christmas Cards to place in an album. We all remember these cards as each and every
Photo Lab sent them out annually. It was a real neat way to see where everyone we knew was stationed and we all
looked forward to each lab’s unique card design. I sent in several from my years and hope you all can find the time
to do so also. Please send them to Ron Mathews at rmathews951@hotmail.com
Our 2015 reunion will be held in San Diego September 23-27. I will be in attendance and I sincerely hope that all
of you who can will attend. I’m confident that in addition to the annual Shoot-Off, the committee will have some
great events. As always, I am looking forward to some competition in the golf tournament. It doesn’t get much
better than the courses in San Diego so bring your clubs. The hotel has also agreed to offer our special pricing for
dates before and after the reunion. It’s an additional opportunity to enjoy San Diego at a reasonable rate.
In conclusion, we all know that survival of an organization depends on the commitment and participation of its
members. I ask each and every one of you for your support and involvement. Come to the reunion, meet with old
friends and shipmates and enjoy the camaraderie which results. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any
questions, ideas to strengthen and grow our association or to just talk. I’m here to serve.
Thanks to all.
John

Membership Update
Hello Shipmates! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday season, it has been a long winter and it is time
to find a cure for that cabin fever. Our membership is slowly and surely inching upwards. With the dates of
this year’s convention now firm I am getting ready to pursue new memberships through social media and our
new webmaster. Rick is a great fellow, I got to spend some time with him during our round trip to Pensacola
last September. He has some great ideas and I am sure he will serve us well.
My focus for the rest of the year will be bringing more MC's into the fold, hopefully getting some of those
old Silver Salts back to NANP, and convincing some of these guys who come and enjoy our annual festivities
to sign on as new members. Our numbers are our strength. It has been a cold winter here in Virginia Beach so
I am packing the RV for a trip to Cocoa Beach for Easter. Enjoy spring, it will be here soon.

CVN/LHD Media Department Update
Shipmates, I work for General Dynamics Information Technology and I’m the project manager for design, integration,
installation and support for all CVN and amphibious media department equipment. This consists of primarily the large
equipment such as the Xerox printers, cutters, staplers, drills, large format printers, laminators, and all the computer
servers and workstations. Over the past eight years I have been involved with the complete rip out and reinstallation of
all ten carriers in an effort to make each carrier a carbon copy. The reasoning behind the change was for continuity between all the ships for the Sailors workflow. Unfortunately the Navy has not made any headway with standardizing the
LHD ships and each of them still stand alone when it comes to equipment. On the east coast we have at least succeeded
in making the four LHD’s somewhat similar.
So what does a carrier media department look like these days? The
old photo lab used to be on the 3rd deck from frame 180 to 190 and
from the port side to amidships. The new media department is now in
that same space plus about 600 more square feet on the starboard side.
The department also owns the TV studio and TV control room on the
O2 under the island. It is really a lot of space for 25 media professionals to work with. What was lost when we built the new space was the
old 4th deck print shop. The print shop was turned over to reactor
training and is now their main classroom.
Each carrier media department is broken into five main spaces. The media leadership office is for the Division officer,
Leading Chief Petty Officer and a second chief. Next is the main desk/reception area. This is where the old photo lab
reception area and supply room were located. The print shop occupies the large space which we all remember as the aft
section of the photo lab. It has two Xerox high volume color printers, two high volume black and white printers, a paper
cutter, a paper stitcher, a paper drill, a classified color printer and a large finishing table in the middle. The fourth area is
color print, which includes two Noritsu digital dry high volume printers, two CD/DVD duplicators/printers, a 44” large
format printer and a 44” hot laminator. In the middle of this space is a large finishing table for final assembly of products. The final area is the electronic imaging area. In this area are eight 27” iMac computers used for imagery work.
There are four Dell PC workstations spread throughout the space as well as a server rack that provides over 36TB of
storage for the media department’s imagery and video products.
The capabilities that Mass Communication Specialists have these days are incredible. The Navy still shoots primarily
Nikon DSLR cameras like the D4, D4s, D3s, and various other models with Nikon glass. Sailors shoot most of their video products on Canon XF-305 digital video cameras in the MPEG-2 format, but many prefer to shoot video with the Nikon D4s or D3s. They produce some amazing products with just a DSLR and an iMac.
The carrier fleet is very capable of documenting any event on board the ship and providing digital images for email and
social media, or even delivering a paper photograph. Believe it or not, a majority of the product going out the front door
are copy products like PQS manuals and other departmental large volume paper products.
Thanks,
Greg McCreash

The 2015 Shoot Off Season
A great 2015 Shoot Off-season is underway as we kick off the DC Shoot Off Photography Workshop from March 19th to
the 22nd at the Navy League Building in Arlington, Virginia. Followed by the DC Video Shoot Off from April 30th
through May 3rd. While we also make our second visit to San Diego for a Shoot Off program happening in line with
NANP’s reunion convention in September.
This year celebrates our tenth year in operation and in that time we have positively influenced hundreds and hundreds of
military and civil service photographers to include invited university photography students. We have helped bridge our
active duty community with civilian industry leaders, professionals and vendors.
NANP’s sponsor a Sailor program has helped over 80-scholarship recipients from our Navy and Marine Corps teams
with registration costs in its fours years of inception, with a total value of over $4,500 through your support. These
scholarships provide an invaluable support stream to those that need additional funding, from commands that didn’t
have the training budget, to individuals who’ve had to pay out of pocket. We do everything we can to ensure that no
one is turned away because of funding issues. Your support helps immensely by giving our veterans the advanced training and mentorship that we have made possible through your generosity.
To recap a little bit from the Pensacola Shoot Off Online competition, it was a great virtual turnout that brought in up to
40 participants from all across the country. Onsite support from Jim Russell and the rest of the NANP reunion staff was
fantastic and we want thank you very much for everything. It was also a treat to have American photography icon Eli
Reed fly in from Chicago on his way home to Austin to give us a presentation and volunteer as a judge for the competition. The local college photography students got a real kick to have such a distinguished artist give them face time and
be a major influence on their photography.
Thank you sponsors, from leaders Donnie McFall of Adorama, who provided the major prize donations, to additional
support from White House News Photographer’s Association President Ron Sachs and Brien Aho of Nikon, the teams at
Camera Bits, B&H Photo Video and Visual Media One. We’d like to send a special shout out to Navy veteran Mark J
Rebilas, for donating a $1000 check he received from Charlotte Motor Speedway Russ Catlin Awards for Excellence in
Motorsports Journalism. Rebilas chose the Shoot Off program to donate his award while shooting for USA Today
Sports. Thank you Mark for such an honorable gift!
I want to conclude by saying thank you to our volunteer support staff and faculty to include Michael “Spooney”
Spoonebarger, Warren Thompson, John Blackie, Ricky Voeltz, Greg McCreash, Todd Beveridge, John Lewin, Andrew
Meyers, Bennie Davis and Bill Auth. And we couldn’t have made it happen without our online family providing mentorship and guidance from the likes of Lance Cheung, Bob Houlihan, Chip Maury, Ken Hackman, Mannie Garcia, Michael Lopez, Sean Hurt, Mickey Strand and Jim Bryant. You all rock!
This year we predict will be one to remember. Be a part of it by participating or support us in anyway possible!
Sincerely,
Johnny Bivera
Founder and Executive Director
