The overall themes of the research include assessment and evidence based practice in neurorehabilitation. Examples of current research includes the redevelopment of the Wessex Head Injury Matrix (a scale for assessment of people with disorders of consciousness) and research on assessment and management of patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) particularly in relation to accurate assessment where more sophisticated approaches such as functional neuroimaging are not available. Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web): Title: Patterns of recovery after severe brain injury Previous research has suggested that people recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury show different patterns of recovery, some recovering rapidly but plateauing early and others recovering more slowly but continuing to recover for longer periods. The proposed study will be a prospective study using an observational approach to monitor recovery. Results will be related to initial assessment results including extent of structural damage to identify behavioural predictors of particular patterns of recovery. This information will be used to develop rehabilitation programmes tailored to the recovery patterns to maximise the ‘critical period’ of opportunity. There is an established support system for PhD students and an opportunity to gain clinical experience in the relevant discipline through the structured PhD modules which include three clinical placement modules.
