Aptitudes for Architecture
COD Architecture students worked together this
summer to build an outdoor gathering pavilion. As part
of the Architecture 2840 Design Build class, 16 students
enrolled in the course designed, built and installed the
temporary seating area just south of the Technical
Education Center. The wooden structure consists of five
bays that form a unique and inviting space on the west
side of campus. Click here for photos and click here
for a video. The project was funded by a $15,000 grant
through the College Foundation’s Resource for
Excellence program. “I wanted to see what would
happen in a design studio class when students needed
to build what they designed,” said Mark Pearson,
Associate Professor of Architecture, who chronicled the
project on his blog. “It’s a valuable educational tool to
simulate a real-world activity with a real-life project that
includes a site and a budget.” Read More
Culinary Degrees Earn
ACFEF Accreditation
The Culinary Arts and
Baking and Pastry Arts
degree programs at
College of DuPage have
received accreditation
through June 2018 from
the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation’s
Accrediting Commission. “The ACFEF accreditation is a
reflection on the high quality of our Culinary Arts program
at College of DuPage,” said Tim Meyers, co-coordinator
of the program. “We are proud of the education that our
students receive, and they are assured that what we
provide is thoroughly preparing them for their future
careers through this accreditation.” ACFEF accreditation
ensures that a program is meeting or exceeding
established standards, offers a high level of
professionalism, and incorporates up-to-date and
current practices.
Financial Foodies
TLC Manager Judy Coates (left) and Financial Affairs
Assistant Vice President Lynn Sapyta take their new
culinary positions seriously during a team-building
exercise held at Wheat Café by the Financial Affairs
office. The week prior to the exercise (which culminated
in lunch created and consumed by participants), the
Finance office completed the 16 Personalities test that
helps individuals understand themselves and others.
Judy Coates then facilitated a discussion about different
personality traits and established teams of two to three
members of opposite personality types. Each team
cooked a different dish together – with the assistance of
COD’s Culinary staff – and then had a “debriefing” about
the experience. Good food and a great time were had by
all. More photos.

Kudos to…the COD Meteorology program team
whose storm chasing vehicles are featured in a
permanent “Science of Storms” exhibit at the Museum
of Science and Industry in Chicago. Special Kudos to
Marketing Director Laurie Jorgensen for providing
these photos (full exhibit left, close-up right).
More Kudos to…Associate Dean Tom Brady who
recently provided a keynote address at the Association of
Midwest Museums' annual conference in St. Louis. His
address was titled: “From Identity Theft to Soft Target –
Museums Are NOT Impervious.” (This is a coincidence in
terms of the photos above.)
More Kudos to…student Michael Yanan who wrote about
his life-changing internship at the Wheaton Chamber of
Commerce for Suburban Life Newspapers.
More Kudos to…the Culinary program and Waterleaf.
Recently, Suburban Life newspapers published two
articles, “Tasteful Education,” which examines the Culinary
Arts program. The second, “Food and Friendship With
Chef Nadia Tilkian,” features Chef Nadia Tilkian’s recipe
for the classic Coq au Vin (special kudos to Marketing
Coordinator Amy Calhoun for the delicious cover and interior
food photos).
Even More Kudos to…Vice President for Student Affairs
Earl Dowling and his team who read a complaint on Twitter
and swooped in to quickly and efficiently fix the problem.
