First Year Engineering Reduced Load Program (Spring 2013 & Fall 2013)
Listed below are the terms and conditions of the modified reduced load program, which allows you to
complete your repeat 1A term courses over two academic terms, during the Spring 2013 and Fall 2013 terms.
Please note that the earliest that you will be able to complete your undergraduate degree with be in 2018.
Also note that this program may impact your ability to fund your undergraduate degree and it is your
responsibility to understand all the consequences before enrolling in this program.
Space in this program is limited and preference will be given to students invited by First Year Engineering.
The program is restricted to students who enrolled in their 1A term for the first time in Fall 2012. Acceptance
into the program requires the approval of an academic advisor from First Year Engineering. The University
of Waterloo Undergraduate Calendar defines the reduced-load 1A program; this agreement supplements, but
does not replace, the rules and regulations presented in the University of Waterloo Undergraduate Calendar.
Terms and Conditions
First 1A Academic Term
1. While repeating the term during the Spring 2013 and Fall 2013, you shall be excused from repeating
individual courses in which a grade of 70% or better has been achieved. If this occurs, other
appropriate courses, as approved by First Year Engineering, must be taken, such that you take a
minimum of three courses.
2. You will be enrolled in three courses in the Spring 2013 academic term upon acceptance into this
program. These three courses will constitute the first part of your repeat 1A term. Chemical, Civil,
Environmental, Geological, Management, Mechanical, and Mechatronics Engineering will be enrolled
in ChE 102 and one of Math 115 or Math 117 (to replace Math 116). Electrical and Computer
Engineering students will be enrolled in ChE 102 and one of Math 117 or GenE 123 (to replace ECE
140). Software Engineering students will be enrolled in two of Math 115, Math 117, and GenE 123 (to
replace ECE 140) courses. The third course will be GenE 199: Strategies and Skills for Academic
Success.
3. The promotion rules for the Spring 2013 term, taken from the University of Waterloo Undergraduate
Calendar, are provided in the table below. If necessary, consult with an academic advisor for your
academic decision and your options in the future. This table applies to students who have already
received the “Required to Repeat 1A” decision at the conclusion of the Fall 2012 term.

4. If you are successful in the first part of the 1A term (i.e. your academic decision for Spring 2013 is
either MC1A or MC1A - conditional), then you will be enrolled in the second part of the 1A term in
the Fall 2013 term when you will take the remaining 1A courses for your program.

5. The promotion rules, taken from the Undergraduate Calendar, are provided in the table below. Note
that the promotion decision depends upon two factors: (a) Your academic decision from the Spring
2013 term (must be MC1A or MC1A – conditional), and (b) Your Fall 2013 term average. If
necessary, consult with an academic advisor for your academic decision and your options in the future.

Co-operative Education
6. Stream 4 students will be eligible for a co-op credited work term during the Winter 2014 term and are
expected to participate in the co-op program. Any changes to the co-op status will require the approval
of Co-operative Education and Career Action (CECA).
7. Stream 4 students will be expected to enrol in a WatPD course for the Winter 2014 term. Any changes
to the enrolment in this course will require the approval of the First Year Engineering Office.
