What are primary and secondary sources?

• Primary Sources— Primary sources are firsthand historical materials that were

written or produced in the time period of a historical event.
Secondary Sources—are materials made by people who were not
eyewitnesses or participants in a historical event and who base their
interpretation of the event on primary sources, research.
Make a list of primary and secondary source examples
• Primary Examples: pictures of an event, description made by a person

participating or witnessing an event, diaries, census records, birth certificates,
receipts, photographs, ID cards, etc.

NHD History Fair Project

National History Day
• The 2014 theme is
“Rights and
Responsibilities.”
• Start in a few couple a
months
• Tentatively due in
January

The purpose of the NHD project is for
you to learn in depth about a historical
topic related to the yearly theme by
conducting primary and secondary
research and then analyzing and
interpreting your research to help you
draw conclusions about the
significance of your topic. Your findings
will be presented as an Exhibit,
Documentary, Performance, Website,
or Research Paper.

American history is a story of migration
• Native Americans, European explorers and
settlers, worldwide immigration, migration
between states….

We are going to visualize a bit of this
