I can trace the historical development of
cell theory.
I can explain the three components of the
cell theory.
Cell Theory
• Theory: An explanation that has been
supported by many observations.
• The cell theory has three parts:
• All living things are composed of one or more
cells.
• Cells are the basic unit of structure and function.
• Cells only come from the reproduction of
existing cells.
All living things are composed
of one or more cells.
unicellular, multicellular,
& unicellular colonies
Cells are the basic unit of
structure and function
• The organelles inside a cell do not
function outside the cell.
• Cells transform and use energy.
• Maintain homeostasis (stable internal conditions).
Cells only come from the
reproduction of other cells.
•
Two basic types of cell reproduction:
• Sexual
• Conjugation - by unicellular organisms
• Meiosis - creation of sex cells (sperm
& eggs)
•
Asexual
• Binary Fission - by unicellular organisms
• Mitosis - by multicellular organisms
