Causes:

1. A major cause of imperialism was
the desire for cheap raw materials
and expanded markets.

2. Feelings of nationalism and
military motives inspired European
nations to conquer more lands.

3. Europeans had negative views
about non-Europeans (“White Man’s
Burden”).
Rudyard Kipling

“White Man’s Burden” was the idea
that Europeans had a duty to
improve the lives of colonial peoples.

4. Social Darwinism – “survival of the
fittest” applied to countries
Repeating cycle

5. By creating “empires” Europeans
needed more empire to support it.
– Need bases and refueling stations that cost
money
– Need colonies to make money
Effects

There were both Negative and Positive
effects for Imperialists and their colonies.
Effects:

Imperialism led to the exploitation of
colonial peoples and their lands.

Europeans improved roads and
bridges and built railroads in colonies
in order to obtain raw materials.

Imperialism spread European culture
to new regions.
