Notes #2-4 Imperialism: When European nations conquered other lands, made them into colonies and controlled their economies. Old vs. New Old Imperialism – Europeans mostly in Americas Mercantilism rebooted- Adam Smith’s idea of nations get wealth through gaining resources and markets expanded. Zaffuts Old vs. New New Imperialism – Focused on Asia and Africa, much more aggressive Zaffuts Causes: 1. A major cause of imperialism was the desire for cheap raw materials and expanded markets. 2. Feelings of nationalism and military motives inspired European nations to conquer more lands. 3. Europeans had negative views about non-Europeans (“White Man’s Burden”). Rudyard Kipling “White Man’s Burden” was the idea that Europeans had a duty to improve the lives of colonial peoples. 4. Social Darwinism – “survival of the fittest” applied to countries Repeating cycle 5. By creating “empires” Europeans needed more empire to support it. – Need bases and refueling stations that cost money – Need colonies to make money Effects There were both Negative and Positive effects for Imperialists and their colonies. Effects: Imperialism led to the exploitation of colonial peoples and their lands. Europeans improved roads and bridges and built railroads in colonies in order to obtain raw materials. Imperialism spread European culture to new regions.
