Blood Components
Plasma-Liquid Component-Makes up 55%
Red Blood Cells-Carry oxygen from lungs to all parts of the body
White Blood Cells-Protect you against diseases
Platelets-cell fragments that play an important role in blood clotting
Cardiovascular System- 3 Main functions-Delivering Materials to Cells, Carrying
wastes away, and fight disease
Blood Flow
Oxygenated Blood from lungs travels through large vessels called PULMONARY
VEINS. Blood enters the left side of the heart emptying into the LEFT ATRIUM.
*Pulmonary Veins are different because they carry oxygenated blood
*Veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart
From the LEFT ATRIUM- Blood flows through a one way valve called BICUSPID
VALVE into the LEFT VENTRICLE
*MOST of this flow-roughly 70% occurs while the heart is relaxed. When
the atrium contracts, it fills the remaining 30% of the ventricle with blood
Ventricle then contracts and exits into an opening that leads to the AORTALargest Artery
*Many arteries branch from the AORTA carrying oxygen rich blood to ALL
PARTS OF THE BODY
*Circulation-gives up oxygen to body tissues and receives CO2.
After flowing through capillaries, the blood returns to the heart.
As it returns, blood enters series of veins eventually entering the Right side of the
heart.
SUPERIOR VENA CAVA-Drains the upper body
INFERIOR VENA CAVA-Drains the lower body
Draining dumps DEOXYGENATED Blood into the RIGHT ATRIUM
Blood passes from RIGHT ATRIUM to the RIGHT VENTRICLE through the
TRICUSPID VALVE
From the RIGHT VENTRICLE, blood travels through the PULMONARY ARTERY
(Carrying blood away from heart) and branches into arteries that carry
deoxygenated blood to the lungs
From the Lungs, it returns to the Left side of heart with Oxygenated blood.
*Repeated Cardiac Cycle of Atrium/Ventricle Contractions
*HEART DISEASE STATISTICS
Heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the
United States *Approximately 1 million lives annually
EVERY 33 SECONDS SOMEONE IN THE UNITED STATES DIES FROM
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE. (Roughly the equivalent of a September 11th like
tragedy repeating itself every 24 hours, 365 days a year!)
More die of heart disease than of AIDS and CANCER COMBINED
This year, more than 920,000 Americans will have a heart attack and nearly half of
them will occur without prior symptoms or warning signs
250,000 Americans die annually of Sudden Cardiac Death=680 every day of the
year
Currently, about 7.9 million Americans are alive who have had a heart attack
Heart Attack-Symptoms Vary from person to person. Approximately 2 out of 3
people experience chest pain, shortness of breath or fatigue a few days or weeks
before attack. ANGINA-Temporary Chest Pain
Stroke- Brain Attack
