The New Imperialism
Objectives
 Today we will develop an understanding of how the
technological advancements of the second industrial
revolution led to the imperialism of the world by
European powers.
Imperialism
 Definition – The policy of extending a country’s
power and influence through diplomacy or military
force.
 The New Imperialism – The practice of imperialism
during the last half of the 19th century, characterized
by the great fervor in which non-European peoples
were subjugated.
New Imperialism Causes Document Based
Question
 “Which economic, political, and social forces were
most responsible for the new imperialism that began
in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries?”

 Carefully read the document-based question. Consider what you

already know about this topic. How would you answer the question
if you had no documents to examine?

documents, formulate a thesis that directly answers the question.
Write a one paragraph response including your thesis and
information from the documents to support your thesis. This
response should be logically presented and should include
information from the documents.
