Current Scholarships available in Guidance

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emancipation Association Scholarship – will award several $1,000 scholarships to high
school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence (minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale), character, and service. A personal
interview is required. Scholarship will be awarded to the financial aid office of the 4-year college/university of the recipients’
choice. Completed applications are due to the organization by November 30, 2014.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship – sponsored by the NC Association of Educators Minority Affairs Commission.
Criteria include minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5, evidence of strong character, community involvement, and must be a NC
resident. All materials must arrive to the organization by the February 2, 2015 deadline.

Kernersville Lions Club Scholarship – $1,000 scholarship awarded to Glenn and East Forsyth High School seniors who will be
entering college in Fall of 2015. Criteria include financial need, academic achievement, and participation in extracurricular
activities. Preference given to students who are visually or hearing impaired (or who have parents who are visually or hearing
impaired), and/or are participating in a service club, community service, or has work experience. Deadline to return completed
applications to Ms. Cannady in Guidance is April 15, 2015 @ 1:45pm (this is an Early Release Day!).

Winston-Salem Engineers Club Scholarship – a $1,000 scholarship will be given to a local senior who will be pursuing an
education in an engineering field at a North Carolina school in Fall of 2015. Criteria include academic merit and extra-curricular
activities. Applications available in Guidance; deadline to the organization is April 16, 2015.
Online Scholarship Opportunities

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards – scholarships valued at $1,000 - $15,000 to seniors planning to enter a 2- or 4-year college
or technical institute and who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit/initiative. Apply online at www.NFIB.com/YEA;
deadline is December 18, 2014.

Hispanic Scholarship Funds – HSF/General College Scholarships are designed to assist students of Hispanic heritage to obtain a
college degree. HSF awards over 150 types of scholarship ranging in value. Applications become available January 1, 2015;
visit www.hsf.net for more information.

John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest – applicants must submit an essay on the political courage of a U.S. elected
official that occurred during or after 1956. Awards of $10,000, $1000, and $500 are available. Students must register and submit
essays online at www.jfklibrary.org. Deadline is January 5, 2015.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program – awards a $10,000 renewable scholarship to high school seniors who
demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship in school and the community. Apply online at
www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships; deadline is January 9, 2015.

Gates Millennium Scholarship – established to provide scholarships to 1,000 low-income African-American, American
Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic Americans in any discipline. Applicants must have a 3.3
unweighted GPA, demonstrate leadership abilities, and significant financial need (meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria).
Scholarship amount will be determined on the basis of the applicant’s financial need. Applications are available online at
www.gmsp.org. Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 15, 2015 at 11:59PM EST.

Hispanic League Scholarship Program –awards $2,000 scholarships to past or present Forsyth County ESL students of
Hispanic origin. Academic achievement and financial need are considerations. U.S. citizenship is not required. Apply online at
www.hispanicleague.org; deadline is January 18, 2015.

Ronald McDonald House Charities National Scholarship Program – offers $1,000 to students from communities who face
limited access to educational and career opportunities. Seniors may apply in 1 of 4 scholarship programs: 1) RMHC/Asia
Scholarship – for students Asian/Pacific heritage; 2) RMHC/Future Achievers – for students of African-American heritage; 3)
RMHC/HACER – for students of Hispanic heritage; 4) RMHC Scholars – for all students. Students may plan to attend a 2- or
4-year college. Criteria include scholarship and financial need. Applications are available online at www.rmhc.org; deadline to
the organization is January 20, 2015.

Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship – open to any high school or college student. Applicant can submit a design or
photograph to be used as a greeting card. $10,000 scholarship awarded. Apply online at www.gallerycollection.com/greetingcards-scholarship.htm. Deadline to submit is February 18, 2015.

Mel Hughes Scholarship Program – annual scholarship program provides educational assistance to members of the Allegacy
Federal Credit Union for post-secondary education. Four $1,300 scholarships for college/university students and four $250
scholarships for community/technical school students are awarded annually. Applicants will be judged on academic performance
(minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 is required), extracurricular and community activities, references, and an essay. For an

Christian College Scholarship – log on to www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in
the $2,500 scholarship drawing.

SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes – $1,000 scholarships for high school seniors. Free to enter. Fifteen
chances to win: one winner every two weeks from October – May. Apply online only at www.offtocollege.info.
Scholarships by Institution

UNC-Greensboro:

UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Scholarship Program. Awards $20,000 over four years to students who select a
major that will lead to N.C. teaching licensure. Must be a NC resident, have a minimum 3.8 weighted GPA, and
minimum 1100 SAT score (critical reading & math only) or 24 ACT composite score. Applications are available online
at http://oss.uncg.edu/teaching-fellows; priority given to those that apply by December 1, 2014.

UNCG Scholars Program (Merit Awards). Offers academically talented incoming freshmen prestigious scholarships
that range from $2,500 to full tuition, fees, room and board. Deadline is December 1, 2014.

UNCG Guarantee. Helps eligible NC students graduate with little or no debt. Qualifying students receive a financial
aid package, academic support, and opportunities for enrollment in the Lloyd International Honors College and study

Meredith College Teaching Fellows Program. Modified version of the state Teaching Fellows Program. Must apply for
admissions to Meredith College and submit a written recommendation letter from a teacher who taught you in an academic
subject area in 11th or 12th grade. Separate application for the Meredith College Teaching Fellows Program is due by January 15,
2015. Apply online at www.meredith.edu/academics/teaching_fellows.

High Point University – Presidential Scholarship Program. Several merit scholarships available for students who have
demonstrated outstanding achievement, good citizenship, strong leadership, and exceptional scholarship. Apply online at
www.highpoint.edu.

American University – Fredrick Douglass Distinguished Scholars Program. A renewable four-year full scholarship.
Preference given to first-generation students as well as those from diverse ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic backgrounds. The most
successful applicants will have a minimum 3.7 unweighted GPA or 3.9 weighted GPA, 1380 SAT (critical reading + math) or 31


Berea College – Berea, KY – Every student at this school receives a four-year tuition scholarship. These scholarships are based


Western Carolina University – several merit-based awards available. Qualified students are considered from their application
for admission.

ECPI – Greensboro – Several scholarships available.

