TERRA Environmental Research Institute Human Body Systems III Ms. Brodermann, Rm. 3202 Syllabus Welcome to Human Body Systems III. This is a course that is highly inquiry-based and interactive. Students will explore the concepts of human medicine and are introduced to the research process. Hands-on projects enable students to investigate human body systems and various health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases. The key biological concepts embedded in the curriculum include homeostasis, metabolism, inheritance of traits, feedback systems, and defense against disease. Students will be responsible for proper use of lab equipment, lab reports and projects assigned throughout each unit. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: Explain how anatomy and physiology are related. Name the levels of structural organization that make up the human body and how they are related. Name the organ systems of the body and briefly state the major functions of each system. Define homeostasis and explain its importance. Describe, identify and classify organs found in each system and their functions. Describe the various body defenses and how disease states affect their response. Describe environmental factors that affect health. Explain common diseases that affect the body systems and traditional and nontraditional treatments for those diseases. Jump drive (USB) 8. roll of paper towel 9. disinfecting wipes or antibacterial wipes 10. a box of examination gloves 11. $20 lab fee (additional information to be forthcoming) TERRA Environmental Research Institute Human Body Systems III Ms. Brodermann, Rm. 3202 Syllabus Course Policies: BE HERE & ON TIME EVERYDAY! - School attendance policies will be followed In order to maximize your instructional time, it is important that you are seated and ready to work when the bell rings. Excused tardies: you must have a pass signed by an administrator or teacher with the time of departure indicated on the pass. Unexcused tardies: 2 unexcused tardies = parent contact and lowered conduct grade. - Passes No student should leave the classroom without a yellow hall pass. Only ask for a pass to leave the class if it is absolutely necessary. BE POLITE & RESPECTFUL AT ALL TIMES! - I will dismiss you from class, not the bell. You will be given an appropriate amount of time at the end of the period to clean your work area. - Profane language is unacceptable - School uniform is to be worn daily and in a proper fashion - Electronics First offense: warning Second offense: will be confiscated ON SIGHT and returned ONLY to parents. BE PREPARED & WORK EVERYDAY! - Bring class supplies daily. - Assignments are due on time; no late assignments will be accepted. - Make-up work: Students WILL NOT be reminded of missing work. It is their responsibility to check the website, ask a classmate, or the teacher. Some labs and dissections will not be possible to make up due to materials and instructional time. Permissible absences will result in either an alternative assignment or an excused grade. All make-up work/quiz/test/ homework will carry a zero until absence is excused. The work must be made up within a week after the student returns to school. Arrangements must be made for missed tests/ quizzes. If your work does not have your name on it and/or is illegible, you will receive a zero. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR EQUIPMENT! - You are responsible for taking care of the equipment you are using. Please inspect the workstation you are using at the beginning of class. - In order to maintain a clean and professional atmosphere, please make sure that your work area is clean. Pick up after yourself before leaving. - Always use your assigned textbook. Miscellaneous: The amount of homework will vary from week to week and many times will depend on how well you use available class time. As a rule, expect homework every night. Homework, labs, etc. will be collected on a regular basis and graded. Binders will be collected and graded after most units at least once every nine weeks. In order to succeed, keep up with homework, be involved in discussion and activities, take notes and review them often and ask questions and/or for help when needed. Extra credit opportunities may be given throughout the year, but are not guaranteed.
