Prerequisite: It is strongly recommended that students taking this class have grades of a strong “B” or better in all previous high school math classes including Algebra II. This class is different than Honor’s Pre-Calculus in that we will cover less material and go a little less deep into the concepts than the Honor’s Pre-Calculus classes. This class will prepare students for the rigor of the Regular Calculus class taught at Novi High School.
Students will need to work very hard to keep up and be successful.
Materials: Students should have the following materials in class every day:
Textbook
Pencil
Paper
Scientific Calculator
Graphing Calculator ( if you have one - TI-84 Plus is recommended )
Homework/Assignments
Student Planner ( students may not leave the room without their planner )
Grading Scale:

Grading: Student’s marking period grades will be comprised of test grades and quiz grades. The semester grade will be cumulative over the 18 weeks. During the 18 weeks, quizzes and homework will count as 30% of the grade and tests as 70% of the grade. At the end of the semester, the cumulative grade will be 85% of the grade and the semester exam will count as 15% of the final grade. Any 8 th semester senior will take a shortened final exam in May.
Tests: Tests will cover one unit of study and vary in point value. Tests will always be announced ahead of time.
Quizzes: Quizzes may come in one of three forms.
Traditional: These quizzes will be announced ahead of time and cover a few sections of a unit.
Socrative; These quizzes will be unannounced. Students will use their smartphones or ipods. Material quizzed will be from only the unit currently being covered.
Homework: I will collect homework sporadically and grade selected problems for a quiz grade. Homework may NOT be handed in late. You either have it in class or you don’t and get a zero for that assignment. If you are absent, you will be excused from that homework assignment.
There are no “make-up” tests or quizzes for students who do not receive the desired grade. If students do their homework every night, get help when they need it and study hard, there should be no need for a “retake”. All work should be shown on homework, quizzes and tests at all times. If the work is not organized and legible, no credit will
be given.
Homework: It is imperative that students do the assigned homework. Practice is the
ONLY way that students will become proficient with the concepts. The homework assignments may be collected for a grade any time. Homework assignments as well as upcoming announced assessments are on the website www.mrscarleymath.weebly.com
.
Students and parents should ALWAYS know what is coming up in terms of homework and assessments!
Academic Honesty: Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student talking during a test or quiz ( even after finishing ) will receive a zero on the assessment. Any student sharing information about a test or quiz will receive a zero for the assessment. Any student using any type of cheat sheet will receive a zero for the assessment. Assessments are shared within the math department, therefore, no assessments may leave the classroom at any time. Students are welcome to come in before or after school to study from previous assessments if they so choose.
Attendance: Daily attendance is expected and necessary for successful completion of any math course. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed work within a reasonable length of time, usually the length of the absence. If the student is absent for a test or quiz, she/he will be expected to take that test/quiz upon returning to class. If the student is absent the day before a test or quiz, he/she will be expected to take it
with the rest of the class. An unexcused absence will result in a zero for the day for any test, quiz, or homework assigned that day. A field trip is not an absence. If a student is on a field trip, he or she is responsible for the homework for that day. It is best for the student to see me before the field trip to learn any new material that may be taught during the class that is missed. Please see attendance policy on the High School
Website.
Behavior Expectations:
Be respectful to all teachers and fellow students
Come to class prepared every day
Be on time
Follow school policies about food and beverages
Cell phones in the container at the front of the room EVERY DAY
Extra Help: Math is cumulative in nature. Once a concept is taught, it is used over and over again in different applications. If a student does not grasp the concept, she/he will continue to struggle every time that concept is incorporated into a problem. To help this situation, I will be available to help your son/daughter in the mornings before school at
6:45 a.m., during Academic Advisory ( passes must be obtained before 7:10am on
Wednesday morning ), and after school when possible. Tests and quizzes missed due to absence may be made up at 6:30 a.m. or after school ( prearranged please ).
As parents, continuous monitoring of your student’s progress is the best game plan. Do not hesitate to call or email me, check MiStar often, check your student’s planner regularly and make every effort to attend conferences.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Debra Carley
