College & Career Information *NEW* College Planning Experts presents “How to Pay for College without Breaking the Bank” – 6:45pm on May 4th at The North Ranch Community Center. See the CCC website for more information. RACC (Regional Admission Counselors of California) have a list of colleges that are still accepting applications for the Fall of 2015. Many of these schools have scholarships and financial aid still available. Check out the RACC Space Availability Report. UCSB & C2 Education are teaming up to present a workshop on Writing the UC Personal Essay and the changes on the SAT on Thursday, May 14th. Juniors should join us at 6:30pm in the MPR/cafeteria and bring paper, pens and your ideas. The current UC prompts will be available. The Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County invites you to investigate good paying jobs and what it takes to get into health, tech-based manufacturing or green jobs. College ROTC Scholarships – Sophomores and Juniors who are interested in ROTC scholarships for college should visit the CCC for more information on requirements and eligibility standards. The 2016 scholarship is now available for applications. It is not too early to think about ROTC College Scholarships! Check out the flyer on the CCC website. Apprenticeship, Career College, Technical School or Vocational Training – If you are not planning on attending a traditional college right out of high school, consider focusing on career with a specialty college or school. Apprenticeship – Cal Apprenticeship has information on California Apprenticeship programs. Career College or Technical Schools – check out the US Department of Education’s website for information on choosing the best school for your career goals. Vocational Training – Conejo Valley Adult Education, Simi Valley Adult Education, Ventura Adult and Continuing Education,or North Valley Occupational Center. Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura Colleges also have career or vocational programs available in Autobody, Biotechnology, Business, Child Development, Computer Technology, Nursing, Welding and more. Please see Mrs. Peters in the CCC for more information. 3. ACT/SAT/PSAT Test Schedule for 2014/15 The ACT and SAT tests are scheduled by the respective boards and not by CVUSD or TOHS. Students must register and pay for the tests online, not at TOHS. Please review the test schedules to best determine which test you should register for. Be aware of deadlines! See what College Board has to say about the redesigned PSAT (October 2015) and the SAT (March 2016). *NEW* C2 Education is offering a Free practice test of the current SAT, the NEW SAT and the ACT. Sign up at C2 Education. *NEW* Kaplan Test Prep is offering Sophomores a free practice test of the NEW PSAT that will be coming in October. The test will take place at CLU on Saturday, May 8th. Register at KapTest. Kaplan Test Prep has created a personal TOHS website for information regarding classes, tutoring, opportunities at TOHS and tips for testing. Check it out! Kaplan Test Prep explains the changes in the 2016 SAT test. College Board Announcements Free SAT practice and video tutorials through Khan Academy. Enhanced Fee-waiver Services – Registration with a fee waiver is now allowed through the late registration period. Fee-waiver users will receive college application fee-waiver forms directly from the College Board. 4. How to Navigate from High School to College Figuring out what college to go to, how to get there and planning out the road map to the perfect school and career is not a quick or easy process. Check out www.collegeappmap.org. The College App Map website, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shows you step by step how to plan for college beginning freshman year. But what if you’re a sophomore, junior or senior? It’s still not too late. You CAN get to college! Also, check out www.roadtripnation.com. This is a fun website for a public television show that has been called “inspiring.” The show travels the US, listening to the life stories of famous and everyday people, how they got to where they are now. It can help students discover what career path they want to follow. You can also check out http://colleges.niche.com/, a student recommended website to research what real students and parents are saying about colleges. Find out where student ranks colleges in academics, athletics, campus dining, housing, drug safety, transportation, weather and much more. Gap Year opportunities are another way students investigate what they want to do in life. Students with the entrepreneurial spirit might want to investigate the Un-College program. Students can network and experience a year of self-discover, while developing their own curriculum. The program is broken up into four 3-month sessions that include internships, travel abroad, living in a Gap Year house and completing a creative project. Visit Gap Year to find out more. 5. Scholarships It’s Scholarship Season! Scholarship information is available on Naviance. Search for scholarships and applications on the Scholarship List link under the Colleges tab. Parents will need their student’s user name and password to fully access the Naviance website. *NEW* There are many scholarship search websites to find scholarships you may qualify for. Be careful when filling out information. The application should not have a fee associated with it. Check out the Scholarship page on the CCC website for a list of scholarship websites! Activities include a coastal monitoring/cleanup by the Balboa Pier, an underwater/scuba cleanup, and hands-on activities. Print out the Work Permit Application and fill out the top portion before you go job searching. Be sure your new employer completely fills out the employer section to avoid delays. Work Permits are required for paid employment for all students under the age of 18. Applications are now available online.
