Ch. 3 – Derivatives
Objectives
Students will be able to:
1. Use the definition of the derivative to find the derivative of a function or derivative at a specific point.
2. Understand and apply the different notations for the derivative of a function.
3. Understand the relationship between the graphs of f and f’ and be able to draw one graph given the other.
4. Know when to use and how to calculate one-sided derivatives.
5. Understand when the derivative does not exist and why.
6. Use the calculator to find a numerical derivative and understand the process used by the calculator.
7. Understand why differentiability implies continuity.
8. Apply the Intermediate Value Theorem to derivatives.
9. Understand and apply the positive integer powers, multiples, sums, and differences rules for derivatives.
10. Understand and apply the derivative rules for products and quotients of functions.
11. Understand and apply the negative integer powers of x using the power rule.
12. Understand and apply second and higher order derivatives.
13. Understand instantaneous rate of change and it’s applications to particle movement.
14. Calculate displacement, average velocity, instantaneous velocity, speed, and acceleration as it applies to motion of an
object.
15. Calculate the derivative of all six basic trigonometric functions.
16. Know and understand the definition of “Jerk” as the derivative of acceleration.
17. Understand and apply the chain rule to a composition of functions – “outside-inside” rule.
18. Understand and apply repeated use of the chain rule to functions with more than two chains.
19. Apply the chain rule to parametric functions and functions with a power rule.
20. Understand the definition of an implicitly defined function and be able to name some examples.
21. Calculate implicit differentiation for the first and second derivative.
22. Know and apply the power rule for rational powers of functions.
23. Know and understand the rule for derivatives of inverse functions.
24. Know and apply the derivatives of arcsine, arctangent, arcsecant, and the other three inverse trig functions.
25. Know and apply the derivative rules for ex, ax, ln(x), and logax to functions.
