June Student/Parent Newsletter POST-SECONDARY 1. FINAL, OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS: All students who apply for admission to a postsecondary program MUST make arrangements to have their official, final high school transcript sent to the post-secondary institution directly from the Ministry of Education. Click here to access the "Request for High School Transcript" form for Saskatchewan. 2. Grade 12 students who have applied for post-secondary are reminded to check their application status to ensure that they arrange for any items which may still be outstanding in order for their application to be processed. As well, students should contact an academic advisor at their post-secondary institution and make an appointment to talk about course selection, etc. 3. Starting school in the fall? Application forms for student loans for 2013-2014 will be available online the first week of June, 2013. Click here to find tips on everything from financing your education to managing your loans. 4. Grade 12 students who have applied to the U of S for the fall of 2013: A reminder that registration for first-year Learning Communities is still open. Sign up is as easy as visiting www.usask.ca/lc and then clicking the big red button to enter the sign up system and choose your LC! Spaces in LCs are limited so you are encouraged to apply early. The deadline to register is noon on June 13, 2013. 5. Grade 12 students: The College of Arts & Science, including the Arts & Science Transition Program, at the U of S has extended its application deadline to July 1, 2013. Students who haven’t yet applied for admission but who want to begin taking classes this fall should apply online. 6. The Summer School Program offers a range of high school credit classes from July 2 to July 29, 2013 at Marion M. Graham Collegiate in Saskatoon. These classes provide high school students and adults with an opportunity to upgrade their academic standing to meet high school graduation and entrance requirements to post-secondary institutions *New in 2013: Saskatoon Public Schools will be offering select Summer School classes on-line. Find more details here. The Saskatoon Greater Catholic Schools Virtual Summer School will also offer courses in July and August 2013. Parkland College in Melville SK offers the only full-time NFPA 1001 Professional Firefighter Training program in Saskatchewan. This 13 week pre-employment program is the necessary first step to begin this career path and is delivered in partnership with Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre. As well, Parkland College offers a 2-week Emergency Medical Responder program twice a year (involves advanced first aid training and allows one to explore the world of Emergency Medical services) as well as the SIAST Primary Care Paramedic Certificate program each year as part of their Emergency Services Training programs. Click here to learn more! 8. Lakeland College is offering a new 8-month Street Rod Technologies program at their Vermillion Campus for the first time this fall. Students will develop applied skills in basic panel restoration, metal identification, welding, sheet metal, shaping, advanced body construction metal shaping, preparation for undercoats, spray gun operation, top coats, custom painting and effects, and undercoats. 9. Are you interested in a career in real estate? Appraisal and Assessment is a two year business major that prepares people for a career in real estate. Students study economics, farmland evaluation, statistics, mass appraisal, property law, and more. Many diploma graduates then choose to continue their studies with a Bachelor of Commerce program. 10. Attend an information session on June 19 from 6-7 p.m. at Great Plains College Warman Campus for more information on the Educational Assistant, Office Administration and Youth Care Worker programs. Current eight-month certificate programs with seats still available include Business (Swift Current), Educational Assistant (Warman), Office Administration (Kindersley, Swift Current and Warman), Welding (Rosetown) and Youth Care Worker (Warman). Don’t forget that students must apply to Great Plains College by June 30 to be eligible for a scholarship in 2013-14. Great Plains College Entrance Scholarships range from $500-$5,000, with a minimum of $500 being awarded to every full-time student in a student loan-eligible program. Students who apply before June 30 of the year they finish Grade 11 are eligible for Early Entrance Awards of $1,000 and additional scholarships are also available to student-athletes based on leadership and athletic abilities. 2. Planning a career in medicine/health sciences? The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame/GreatWest Life, London Life and Canada Life Scholarship Fund provides $1000 per year toward a four-year undergraduate degree at any accredited Canadian university. Applicants must have an 85% or greater average and be able to provide examples that demonstrate their skills for leadership, collaboration, communication, ability to interest people in issues that they are passionate about, and that their lifestyle is characterized by honesty, integrity, respect and compassion. The deadline for applications is June 10th, 2013. 3. The 2014 EF Tours Global Citizen Scholarships is an exclusive program designed to reward student leaders who are committed to driving change and who display a passion for other cultures and global discovery. Share your story and tell EF how you demonstrate leadership, a passion for other cultures and commitment to change and you could earn an inspirational journey across the globe. The deadline is June 16th, 2013. 4. The Saskatchewan Physical Education Association (SPEA) is now accepting applications for its annual scholarships. Two awards of $700 will be presented to high school graduates based on enrollment in U of R or U of S Kinesiology/Physical Education programs or in a SIAST recreation/leisure program. Applicants must be actively involved in high school Phys. Ed., intramural & extracurricular programs, have an average of at least 70%, and display strong leadership and sportsmanlike qualities. The application deadline is June 30th, 2013. 5. The Learning Disabilities Association of Saskatchewan has two scholarships worth $1500 each for individuals with learning disabilities who are pursuing post-secondary education. Applicants must complete a one page explanation of how learning disabilities have affected his/her life, how he/she has learned to work with and compensate for those disabilities and what he/she hopes to do in the future. Applications will be accepted until June 30th, 2013. 6. Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers Program is proud to award the OYF Memorial Scholarship, worth $1000, to an individual pursuing post-secondary education leading to a diploma or degree in agriculture. Applicants must submit a short essay explaining why they are passionate about agriculture in Canada. Applications must be received no later than June 30th, 2013. 7. The National Union's Scholarship Program offers four awards given each year to children of NUPGE members: a. The Tommy Douglas Scholarship ($1500) is open to all students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: How Tommy Douglas contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society. b. The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship ($1500) is open to students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities. c. The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians ($1,500) is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2013-2014. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians. d. The Scholarship for Visible Minorities ($1,500) is open to all visible minority students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education full-time. It will be awarded for the best 750-1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities. Note: The application deadline for all four scholarships is June 30th, 2013. 8. The BBG Communications Scholarship ($1000) is designed for students between the ages of 16 and 21 who are currently in or will be attending an institution of higher education in the fall of 2013. Applicants must submit answers to two essay questions. The application deadline is June 30th, 2013. 9. SportLogo is providing two scholarships this year ($500 each) to students (one male and one female) who have demonstrated exceptional involvement in their school. Application forms are available from the Athletic Director at your school, but the deadline to apply is Monday, June 10th so apply now! 10. Grade 11 & 12 students: Assignment: Saving Lives is an opportunity for interested and motivated Grade 11, 12 & University/College students to assist Canadian Blood Services. In exchange for recruiting a minimum of 25 blood donors from June to the September long weekend, students may be awarded one of at least 20 bursaries towards their post-secondary education. Any Grade 12 student who applies to an eligible program at Lakeland College (Agribusiness, Business, Educational Assistant, Environmental Sciences and University Transfer) before June 30, 2013, and had a Grade 11 average between 85 and 100% automatically qualifies for Lakeland College's Academic Excellence Scholarship 12. Students interested in applying for student awards at SIAST for the 2013-2014 academic year should apply between June 1 and July 15, 2013. There may be additional awards available during the August 1 to September 15, and the October 1 to November 15 application periods. Individuals must have a SIAST student ID number in order to apply for SIAST Student Awards -- students receive a SIAST student ID number only after they have applied for admission. Awards are then paid out after the commencement of the program. 13. The Saskatchewan School Boards Association offers two $2,500 scholarships for students graduating from high school. One is for a student entering university in the fall and the other is for a student entering a recognized institute of applied science and technology in Saskatchewan (e.g. SIAST). Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of (i) demonstrated good character, (ii) community leadership, (iii) financial need and (iv) a 500-word essay. Be sure to bring a copy of the letter of any scholarship offers that you have received to your school counsellor or administration so it can be included in graduation or awards programs at your school. TRADES INFORMATION 1. Are you interested in Heavy Equipment Operator Training? The Practicum Training Institute in Saskatoon provides a 240 hour pre-employment Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program that may widen your employment opportunities in the industry as students have the ability to receive training on multiple pieces of equipment. The Subaru Western Triathlon Series (held in Saskatoon June 28 to June 30, 2013) is in need of volunteers for a variety of tasks throughout the weekend event. Bethany College in Hepburn SK offers a series of Sports Camps through the summer. This summer's camps include: Elite Volleyball (July 8-12); Attack Volleyball (July 15-19); On The Pitch Soccer (July 15-19) and Above The Rim Basketball (July 22-26). Students from across Canada spend a week in Ottawa and have a choice of one of 12 career-themed weeks, offered at various times over a 26-week period (from mid-September to early December and from late January to early May). The themes include: Sports & Fitness; Arts & Culture; Law; Ecology & Environment; Medicine & Health; Canada Remembers; Science & Technology; Journalism & Communications; International Affairs; Vimy: Canada's Coming of Age; Politics in Canada; and RCMP. The weekly theme unites like-minded teens in broadening their vision of potential career paths and life interests through hands-on, interactive presentations, workshops, visits and meetings with professionals and specialists. The program costs $675 and registration information for 2013-2014 is available online. For those of you in the Duke of Edinburgh program, this would be a terrific Residential Project! 4. Do you like camping and exploring? Are you looking for an exciting new adventure and the chance to make new friends? If so, then St. John Bosco Wilderness Camp is for you! SJBWC is a summer camp for youth ages 8 to 17. The focus at camp is having fun, learning and living in the outdoors. Camp activities include archery, sports, swimming, canoeing, orienteering, art and much more! The core experience is the out-trip, where campers have the opportunity to experience wilderness travel while hiking and camping.
