Born June 9th, 1906 in Harbor Springs, MI which was a resort town for Business CEOs (White only) Father: Local Dentist who was also an inventor and tinkerer Growing up: Fawned over the famous people and was a golf caddy for many. Dad wanted him to be a dentist, but he wanted to be the next big singer. Studied Music for 8 years at U-Michigan. Moved to New York in 1932 but blew the audition. Realized he needed to be a different job and started studying optometry He like glasses because they were a gadget that he could tinker with. Worked for Bausch & Lomb during WWII to improve artillery scopes and binoculars. Became a salesman after the war, but hated it. Also hated how glasses were made of glass and were so fragile Determined to be rich, he created Armorlite, where he perfected plastic lenses in 1947. Went on to help perfect contacts, antireflective coating for lenses, UVprotective lenses, etc. Had 8 children from 4 women. Was married to 3 women. The third, Marta Ve Everton, 21 years younger, was exactly who he was looking for. Believed in the idea of Eugenics, which is creating the perfect race. Felt that positive Eugenics was the right way to go by spreading the genius that is in the gene pool. Originally was going to create his own nation for geniuses to live to create the perfect research society. The idea fell through. His Childhood hero, Ephriam Shay was a famous inventor who Graham thought died childless when Graham was 10. Graham never knew he was wrong. Graham met a man in 1963 named Hermann Muller, a Nobel Scientist famed for discovering x-rays cause genetic mutations. Muller felt America was being over-run by people with inferior IQ and genetics, an idea that Graham shared. Graham and Muller agreed to start the Hermann J. Muller Repository of Germinal Choice to store and pass on the seeds of “outstanding individuals” who had “high intelligence and cooperative.” Muller wanted to wait until everything was ready rather than hurry and give people the wrong impression. Graham agreed, even though he wanted changes right away. Muller also wanted a lot of restrictions on the sperm as well, in which it’s freely given and that it can’t be used until 25 years after the death of the donor to fully judge how much of an impact the individual had. In 1967, Muller died, leaving Graham able to do whatever he wanted. Charted the Hermann J. Muller Repository of Germinal Choice in 1971. Officially started collecting sperm in 1976. Sold Armorlite for $70 Million in 1978 to fund the sperm bank. Graham would send flattering letters to Nobel Laureates. With any returned interest, he would follow up with many phone calls saying how much more they can benefit humanity. After he got them hooked, he and his assistant, Stephan Broder (a technician), would meet them to collect the sample. Very few Nobel Laureates were interested, so Graham branched out. Started taking successful, healthy, and almost always White men. He also took people who were on the rise and, in one situation, the son of a Nobel Laureate. Originally, Graham would meet the donor and collect a sample directly. Eventually, it became feasible for him to collect sperm through the mail, so long as proper pre-cautions were made. The sperm itself would be in a test-tube with a mixture to prevent it from freezing solid in a vat of liquid nitrogen. One of the biggest problems that Graham had was the number of donors was extremely small. He started with only 3 (!!) donors. Many of the people he approached were uninterested or had a vasectomy. Graham had the opposite issue with applicants. Within a very short amount of time, he had thousands of applicants! Graham had money can could flatter the men, but didn’t know how to run a sperm bank. Workers had no filing system and wouldn’t always file information. Once, they were found to use the same identifying color to identify two donors. (Donor Orange) Later fixed when a filer was hired. The first child born: Victoria Kowalski was born and then thrust into the media spotlight. The media then discovered that her parents were newly released convicted felons who ran scams for money and often harassed their previous children if they didn’t reach their exceedingly lofty expectations. Shockey was an original Nobel Laureate (created transistors) donor. Was exceedingly arrogant and smug. Also was a known racist for he thought blacks were not as intelligent as whites. Made the Genius Sperm Bank into a national laughing stock. Only “confirmed” public donor. Older gentleman Was known for being exceptionally polite and friendly. Often said something was “pleasing.” Exceptionally hard working and lived through work. Sired multiple children through the Genius Sperm Bank. Bonded with child Joy. Baby Joy was given the chance to meet her Donor Father when she was one. Was able to meet him again later in life. Joy was extremely intelligent and extraverted. Loved to dance and exceptionally gifted in Ballet. Known as Jeremy Donated by lying about his IQ. Was a med-student when donated but didn’t practice medicine. Was openly a slob, though charismatic. Knowingly fathered many children through sex and sperm bank. “X children by Y women,” and neither number was small. Only openly looked after 2 of his children. Exceptionally gifted. Classical Pianist Aspired to be a Marine Biologist Loved Computers and chess Extremely hard-working Realized Donor Coral wasn’t who he claimed to be from the Genius Sperm Bank and refused to see him. Loves to play video games. Was taking 19 credits at college with a 3.8 GPA at 17. Tom also loves Insane Clown Posse, and created a rap group with friends of his. Openly admitted to taking therapy after friend attempted suicide Has a child, named Darian, with his girlfriend (eventually wife) Lana, when they were both 17. While there were dozens of other donors, none came forward with their real name to admit they were donors. It was rumored that Graham had persuaded Jonas Salk, the creator of the polio vaccine, to be an original donor but this was never verified. Graham died in 1998. While there was money to keep the bank going, Graham’s children had no interest running the bank. It closed its doors in 1999. While there were other sperm banks that were more used and successful, they started changing their donor requirements to be more strict. Started caring more about health of donor instead of just getting their sperm. Now, it’s very difficult to receive the offer to donate. The children were found to be often be distinctly different than their genius fathers. The genes that were expressed were tied closely to how their mothers raised them. Would you donate to or use the sperm bank for yourself? One of the requirements that Muller wanted was to have to wait until 25 years after the donor’s death to determine their worth. Do you think that was something Graham should have done to avoid a “Donor Coral” situation? Rap-up video one Rap-up video two
