IX. My Resume
First off, let me introduce myself…
●
My name is Rachel Martone, and I am currently a
senior Marketing and Global Management major, with a
double minor in French and Economics, at the University
of Pittsburgh, College of Business Administration.
●
I will graduate this upcoming April, and am searching for a
full-time position, hopefully one that incorporates both of my
majors. I plan to get my MBA after I gain a few years’ work
experience.
●
I participated in the International Internship Program (IIP)
through the College of Business Administration in the summer of
2012, in which I studied and worked in Paris, France.
●
This experience marked my first marketing internship, where
I was able to put the tools and concepts I have been learning about
into practice.
●
I interned for a small, French startup company by the name of
Clé Privée, which translates into English as ‘Secret Key.’
●
For the entire months of June and July, I was a valuable part
of this six person team young and passionate friends.
●
Clé Privée is an online collection of unique
and boutique hotel rooms around the world.
●
The firm partners with only the most luxurious
and exclusive hotels, villas, and bed & breakfasts.
●
Each hotel is featured on a stylish webpage, which
includes hotel background, area information and individual
room descriptions for its sought-after chambres.
●
Access to the collection is now exclusive, serving an elite
clientele through paid membership or through the purchase of a
‘key.’
● Keys are engraved with a personalized code
that guests enter online to obtain access to the
private selection of beautiful rooms.
● Many of the keys are offered as a gift. The
recipient is able to choose his/her favorite from a
series of rooms by theme or destination.
●
The price of the key dictates the length of the stay and
the selection of rooms.
●
Clé Privée keys can be purchased online, over the
phone, or at high-end department stores in Paris.
●
●

Where Did I Fit in at Clé Privée?
●
The firm consisted of three Frenchman, one
Italian woman, and three American women,
including myself.
●
I was hired because of my experience abroad,
marketing background, and English writing skills.
● The team was behind in creating hotel presentations
for their ever-growing partner list, so I was asked to write
alluring, yet informative, descriptions.
●
My marketing skills were to lend a hand during the
brainstorming sessions that are so essential for a new
company trying to capture market share.
●
I was later given the responsibility of cleaning up the
company’s online database, which stores the information presented
on the website, which is the main interface.
●
After enough time with the company. I was also able to directly
respond to customers’ questions and inquiries over email.
Generating Marketing Ideas
●
From time to time, my coworkers and I
brainstormed about ways to reposition the Clé
Privée brand using the interactive Google Docs.
●
Some parts in French and other parts in
English, we worked off of each other’s ideas for
new taglines, concepts, and promotions.
Writing Samples
●
The following are hotel, area, and room
descriptions I created for clients based upon
websites, pictures, and emails.
●
I also used the Internet to research the
cities, towns, villages, and nearby attractions.
●
I have arranged them by place, to showcase the
diverse locations about which I wrote.
●
Although I have a large collection constituting
2 months of work, I have chosen these samples
because I believe they are my strongest.
●
They are arranged alphabetically by country name.
●
Enjoy!

Darma, as guests receive a cup of mint tea and a tour of the homeaway-from-home dwelling. A terrace rooftop offers not only shaded
sofas, a sun-drenched pool, and view of Marrakech extending to the
Atlas Mountains: it offers pure nirvana.
Dar Darma does not resemble a standard hotel; rather, it is
reminiscent of an elegant palace that provides guests with
luxurious sights and services. With only five rooms, intimacy and
exclusivity are guaranteed. There is no sign on the front door,
literally hiding the hotel away from the hustle and bustle of
Marrakech. The friendly staff members are always on hand to

Relax at one of the several the lounges and dining areas, which are
all beautifully decorated in classic Moroccan style. Go to the
Hammam for a traditional bath, or request an additional beauty
treatment. Take advantage of any of the delightful hotel activities,
such as a cooking class or seasonal excursion. Regardless of what
you do, Riad Dar Darma will provide an unforgettable sojourn in
Marrakech.
Area
Riad Dar Darma is conveniently positioned in the center of the
Medina, nestled in the historical old quarter of Marrakech.
Marrakech, the third largest city and former imperial city of
Morocco, is near the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. It is often
viewed as a gateway between the East and West, being only 2 to 3
hours from mainland Europe. Marrakech is divided into two parts:
the Medina (the old city) and the European modern district called
Gueliz, or Ville Nouvelle. It has the largest Berber market (Souk) in
Morocco. Bordering one edge of the soul is the square Jemaa el
Fna, one of the largest in Africa. Snake charmers, henna artists,
and orange juice stalls are scattered around the day. As evening
falls, story tellers, musicians, and magicians charm locals and
tourists alike. Night time brings dozens of food stalls and lots of
hungry people. Visit the beautiful Ben Youssef Madrasa, Koutoubia
Mosque, and the Saadian Tombs.
Rooms
Patio Suites
The two Patio Suites at Riad Dar Darma are beautiful examples of
contemporary Moroccan style. Light walls are accented by dark
furniture, making the rooms fresh and intriguing. Open the
sweeping, arched windows and relax on the chaise lounges which
overlook the patio. Two, dark wooden four poster twin beds are in
the bedroom, and a shower, bathtub, and beautiful stone double
sink complete the bathroom. Guests will want for nothing when
staying in this magnificent suite.
The Red Room
With a 17th century decor, the palatial Red Apartment does not
miss a detail, making it wonderfully authentic. At 140 sqm, this is

adorned with a fireplace, a tall, hand-painted wooden ceiling, and a
leopard skin rug, the great room is exactly that—great. It overlooks
a beautiful patio. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, each
with a four poster king sized bed and large bathtub. Guests will feel
like a sultan in this spacious and luxurious suite.
Portugal
Hotel Teatro, Porto
Hotel
The Hotel Teatro, situated on the spot where a grand theater once
sat, is a design hotel in the historic city center of Porto, Portugal.
The theater has never looked as elegant as it does at Hotel Teatro.
The theme is evident in the décor and the details, like the lavish
costumes, both on racks and under illuminated glass or the
hanging stage lights, but is never overdone. Its unique style has
earned the hotel TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence.
A glamorous lobby, bathed in polished chocolate wood and golden
spotlights, houses the ‘box office,’ or reception, where guests are
given tickets to the ultimate show – their rooms. Guests will fall in
love with the gold and ochre furnishings, the luxurious bathrooms,
and the high-tech amenities.
Palco Restaurant serves contemporary Portuguese cuisine, and
offers a superb five-course tasting menu. Enjoy a complimentary
glass of port at the Plateia Bar. The hotel also has a gym on the top
floor, and a pretty inner courtyard. In-room spa treatments can be
arranged.
The Hotel Teatro is perfect for guests seeking a luxurious and
distinctive stay in the historic city center, an official UNSECO World
Heritage Site, of Porto.
Area
Porto, or Oporto, is the second largest city in Portugal. The historic
center, where Hotel Teatro is situated, is an official UNSECO World
Heritage Site.
Although Porto is a busy industrial city, it is very charming. Built
along the hillsides overlooking the mouth of the Douro, the urban
area is one of the oldest in Europe, dating back to the 4th century.
It was once an outpost of the Roman Empire.
The fortified wine, port, takes its name from the city. It is hard to
know when port was first made. In the 17th century, Britain was at
war with France, and hence had a blockade of French wine; it
turned to longtime ally, Portugal, for a substitute. Many
Englishmen traveled to the Douro River. It was here that they
stopped the fermentation of red wine with brandy while it was still
sweet, fruity, and strong.
The city is extremely hilly, with many buildings built into a cliff face
that overlooks the river, and can be laborious for walking tours. It
always been and is still a mercantile city. The city center is uniquely
baroque; medieval and modern architecture sit side by side.
The hotel is a ten minute walk from the Ribeira (River Front)
district. There are many good restaurants, bars, pubs, and night
clubs. Great places to visit in Porto are the Porto Cathedral, Church
of São Francisco church, Portuguese Photography Museum, the
Stock Exchange palace, and the Mercado do Bolhão, a traditional
food market. Across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia houses the wine
cellars. Take a port wine tasting tour and a cruise up the Douro
River.
Rooms
Audience Rooms
Hotel Teatro has five Audience Rooms with a view of the inner
courtyard. These suites are exquisitely designed, equipped with
high-tech amenities, and subtly evoke the glamour of midcentury
theater.
Soft lighting illuminates the rich carpet, where elegant dark
polished furnishings sit. A unique wooden headboard climbs the
ceiling above the large plush bed. In front, a small free standing
wall has a built-in work desk and a TV that can rotate to face the
bed or the seating area. There is a splendid four-legged bathtub in
the bedroom. A luxurious bathroom housed in glass features a
shower with a rainfall shower-head, soft bathrobes, and stylish hisand-her bowl sinks.
Explore the wine caves across the Douro River and see how port
has been made for centuries here in Porto. There is much to see
and do in Porto, so resist the temptation of relaxing in your stylish
suite and go discover the mystery of this ancient mercantile town.
Gallery Room
There are fifty-one Gallery Rooms at Hotel Teatro that have either a
view of the historic streets below or of the hotel’s inner courtyard.
Elegant décor, luxurious bathrooms, and interconnecting room
options make for a perfect stay at this trendy design hotel.
Ochre wood furniture is accented by gold and bronze. The two twin
beds or one large double bed made in crisp white linens sit in front
of expansive mirrors with grand mahogany frames. Immaculate
bathrooms housed in glass feature large four-legged bathtubs or
showers, soft bath slippers, and contemporary bowl sinks. Modern
amenities like flat screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, hairdryers, and
room service come standard in these stylish rooms.
Make a reservations at for a romantic dinner for two at the hotel’s
own Palco Restaurant, then head to the Plateia Bar for port
nightcap. Although you may be tempted to spend your time at the
Hotel Teatro, don’t forget to discover the ancient charm of Porto.

In the heart of the Thar Desert stands the majestic ‘Fort of the
Sun”, Mihir Garh. Built by skilled workmen of the Rajasthan region,
this desert castle rises out of the sand to give guests true Indian
luxury.
Husband and wife Sidharth and Rashmi Singh have accomplished
their years-long dream of sharing the magnificent beauty of the
dunes. It is clear to see the personal touches that went into Mihir
Garh - like the fireplaces crafted by women of nearby villages, or the
hand selected staff members. The hotel is beautifully decorated in a
distinctly Rajasthani style: bright fabrics, rounded corners, and
plenty of alcoves. The owners want nothing less than perfect for
their guests, and they can be proud that they have accomplished
one of the most lavish desert experiences imaginable.

Pool House is a charming hotel in the small crofting hamlet of
Poolewe, overlooking River Ewe flowing into Loch Ewe and the lush
sub-tropical Inverewe Garden. Although the exterior of the building
may be simple with white washed walls and slated roofs, the
interior is anything but, a rich, opulent style is adorned with
worldly antiques and trinkets. The Harrison family runs the hotel
from their private home, so except to be treated as good friends;
owner Peter may even share a few stories over drinks.
Each of the five suites, with a sea or river view, is named after a
naval vessel from the Royal Navy, who was stationed in Poolewe
during World War II. Comfy chairs and a cozy fireplace garnish the
family’s library. A billiard room (the Rowallan Room) houses a fullsized antique pool table, leather sofas, a Victorian piano, and a bar
with a very impressive whiskey collection. A five-course Scottish
dinner made by award-winning chef John Moir is served in an
elegant dining room (SS Henry Bacon); guests meet in the drawing
room at 7 for a pre-dinner drink.

intimate guesthouse as beautiful as the view should book a sojourn

The Whimbrel is a quaint boathouse separate from the main
building and has a private terrace with a hot tub looking out over
Loch ewe. Anyone in the mood for a romantic getaway?
It is hard to decide which is the best part of the Whimbrel. It might
be the king sized replica of the bed Napoleon gave to Josephine.
Could it be the décor, like the polished oak floors, the high ceiling
with old fashioned wooden beams, and the mood lighting? Or
maybe yet it is the grand sunken bathroom with blue LED recessed
lighting in the tiled Italian bathroom.
Whimbrel is perfect for couples searching for a guesthouse
experience but with the added bonus of privacy.

Area
The Zetter Townhouse is located in the Clerkenwell area of central
London. It is a convenient location near many attractions, but you’ll
really want to spend some time checking out the vibrant culture of
Clerkenwell.
Clerkenwell has a rich history, beginning in the middle ages when it
was named after the parish clerks put on biblical plays. The English
monastic headquarters of the Knights Hospitallers, a religious and
military order from Jerusalem resided here. More recently, St. John
Ambulance Association was headquartered in Clerkenwell. In the
the 17th century, Clerkenwell was the place to live, as the likes of
Oliver Cromwell, Erasmus Smith, and aristocratic nobles. The
Industrial Revolution brought about changes to the area, including
the advent of breweries and printing shops; Europe's oldest printing
company, Witherby’s, is here. It was also known making highquality watches and clocks. After World War II, the area hit a
slump. In the 1980’s, it underwent a revival and gentrification, as
offices, nightclubs, and young professionals moved into former
industrial buildings. Clerkenwell has seemed to attract many
architects and design professionals. It is a very fashion forward part
of time .
You will find no grass at Clerkenwell Green; it is a well-preserved
village center with houses, offices, and pubs. The original Sadler's
Wells Theatre from 1683 is one of the top dance venues and
producing houses in England. Foodies flock to Clerkenwell for many
of London’s best restaurants, such as St. John, Moro, Bistrot Bruno
Loubet, and the Michelin starred Club Gascon. Clerkenwell is also
home to the first ever gastropub, The Eagle.
Room
The Townhouse Suite is a classic British affair: a proper sitting
room for entertaining guests, a cozy bedroom to rest (or not), and a
large tub in which to soak as you sip on tea.
Warm colors coat the walls and the antique furnishings. A comfy
bed sits under an elegant half canopy surrounded by pretty
curtains. The rich striped carpet stretches to the living room with
sash windows, an antique coffee table, and a sofa bed. A
sumptuous bathroom houses a four-legged tub, a walk-in shower
with a rain showerhead, soft bathrobes and slippers, and luxurious
REN toiletries.
Don’t forget to explore the vibrant Clerkenwell district, and make a
reservation at Bistrot Bruno Loubet just across the way at the main
Zetter Hotel. End your day at the hotel’s Cocktail Lounge before you
stumble happily to your Townhouse Suite.

Database Management
●
I learned how to enter, organize, and change
data for Clé Privée’s online database that generated
content for the website.
●
I was given the task of sorting through each
entry and ensuring that the information was correct
and complete.
Responding to Customer Inquires
●
Near the end of my time at Clé Privée, I
spent time emailing influential travel editors,
writes, and bloggers with a promotional offer
to generate site traffic and spread brand
awareness.
●
Occasionally, someone would respond to my
with questions about the company, the website, and
the Clé Privée objective.
●
By this time, I was knowledgeable enough
about the company to answer questions myself.
●
●
Through this delegation of authority, I
experienced empowerment.
This empowerment gave me confidence in work and
my sense of belonging at the company.
So after two months working for a
small French firm…
●
I learned firsthand how an
entrepreneurial company functions, and
overcomes daily struggles and celebrates small
successes.
●
I valued the input I was given by my
colleagues to work more efficiently and the
drive I was given by my superiors to think
outside the box.
●
I implemented and fine-tuned the marketing
tools and concepts I’ve learned in classes.
●
I improved my English writing and French speaking
skills.
●
And most importantly, I gained distinctive knowledge that I will
take along with me to my career.
