1. Cloud Economics
Overview
One of the core benefits of Cloud services is the truly disruptive utility price models that
they are based on. This utility pricing is designed to facilitate new levels of agility,
flexibility and scalability in stark contrast to traditional solutions.
In order to extract maximum benefit from Cloud Economics, it is important that you
optimise your solution by considering the following key principles.
Key Principles
As Skyscape pricing is based on actual consumption (e.g. per VM per hour, per GB per
month, etc.) it is essential that you model your pricing based on predicted utilisation rather
than a high watermark (e.g. peak capacity) as you might when sizing traditional solutions.
Consider the following:

What is the ramp up period from zero to full utilisation? (e.g. if your business-asusual solution requires 50 servers and your go-live is in 6 months time, it is likely
that you might only require 5 servers in month 1, 15 in month 2, etc).

Do all the servers have to run all the time? As VM’s are charged by the hour, you
can make significant savings by turning off your VM’s when they are not needed
(e.g. overnight or during weekends).

Would you benefit from an Annual Subscription? For those VM’s that need to run
24/7, you should consider a 12 month subscription which would entitle those VM’s
to a useful discount.

Some non-production environments might only be required during certain times of
the project/year. Hence if you only need a UAT environment one week per month,
be sure to factor that in to the hourly pricing.

Are your servers right-sized? It is very easy to scale-up your servers with more
CPU, Memory or Storage resources so it is often prudent to start small and scale
up if you really need more capacity.

Do you require those redundant virtual machines? The Skyscape Cloud platform
offers inherent resilience to mitigate hardware failure and even site failure (at
ENHANCED service level). Be sure you need redundancy at the application layer
before you add in the additional cost of these redundant virtual servers.

2. IaaS: Compute (Production)
Please review the Skyscape Compute as a Service (Production) Service Description for
full details of the service including a description of service levels, features, requirements
and customer/partner responsibilities.
Step 1: Select Virtual Machines based on desired Size, Service Level &
Impact Level
Each Virtual Machine is billed per hour, so if you do not require VM’s to run 24x7, model
the calculations accordingly. For example, a VM which is run 8 hours a day, 5 days a
week is up-to 73% less expensive than running the VM 24x7.

5. IaaS: DR as a Service
Pricing is based on the resources consumed when DR is invoked (compute, operating
systems, storage and connectivity charges) and when DR is not (storage and
connectivity).
Skyscape offer two basic solutions, the price of which will vary dependant on the
Consumers individual requirements such as number of virtual machines, size, storage,
RTO and RPO etc.
Option 1 – Suitable for solutions requiring a very short Recovery Time Objective. The
storage in this option is local to the compute environment.
Step 1: Consumers must calculate the potential storage charges by estimating what their
storage requirements are and take in to consideration the various backups and snapshots
needed.
There is a £50 per VM per month charge plus storage based on the below price.
Basic Storage (Primary storage only)
£0.53 / GB / Month
Step 2: Calculate the potential charges when the VM is running i.e. when DR is invoked.
See Compute pricing in section 2/3.
Option 2 – Suitable for solutions which can tolerate a longer Recovery Time Objective. In
this instance the storage used is our Storage as a Service solution which is lower priced
but requires data to be moved to the Compute environment when DR is invoked. VMs
may be required to act as the end point for data to be replicated to.
Step 1: Clients must calculate the potential charges by estimating what their storage
requirements are and take in to consideration the various backups and snapshots. See
Skyscape’s Storage as Service offerings (e.g. API accessible storage in the Cloud) for
more details around the functionality.
There is a £50 per VM per month charge plus storage based on the pricing in section 4.
Step 2: Calculate the potential charges when the VM is running i.e. when DR is invoked.

7. PaaS: Cloud Foundry (BETA)
As this service is primarily an IaaS service, the main components of the Skyscape price
are the underlying IaaS resources that are required to support the workload. In addition,
customers may choose to use a specialist partner for a variety of enablement services
and customers may also choose to use software services which might require licenses or
support subscriptions as shown in figure 2. For clarity, Skyscape do not mandate either
the use of partners or the necessity to procure licenses/subscriptions.

8. PaaS: Hadoop in the Cloud (BETA)

Figure 2 Pricing Hadoop in the Cloud
Step 1: Size the Infrastructure

Name Node – the sizing of this node is dependent on the amount of data and
number of files that the Hadoop cluster hosts. It is heavily RAM dependant so
usually requires a Medium High Memory or Large High Memory VM size. You can
only have one Name Node.

Worker Nodes – these nodes provide the computational analysis on the data.
They read data blocks from the data nodes. Hence a Medium VM size is typical.
The number of worker nodes depends on how much computation your analysis
requires.

Data Nodes – these nodes are IO intensive (long sequential reads) so don’t need
quite as much CPU and RAM resources. A Small or Medium sized VM is typical.
The number of data nodes depends on how much data you want to analyse.

Storage – all nodes come with 50GB of storage local to the VM. All nodes can be
allocated additional storage (currently at £0.35 per GB per month).
Step 2: Select your partner (optional)

Skyscape provide a Hadoop enabled platform on which technical data scientists
can build analysis, visualisation and other related business tools.

Customers who have (or are developing) in-house skills and experience with
Hadoop should be able to gain benefit from using Skyscape Hadoop in the Cloud
directly.


Customers expecting a service providing Business Intelligence or Data Analytics
will require a specialist partner to build those layers on top of the Skyscape
Hadoop in the Cloud stack.

Skyscape can introduce customers to a variety of partners in our Partner
Programme, many of which have appropriate Specialist Consulting Services in GCloud.
Step 3: Licensing and Subscription (optional)

Skyscape Hadoop in the Cloud is powered by Pivotal HD Community edition, a
Hadoop distribution based on open-source Apache Hadoop.

Pivotal HD Community edition is limited to a maximum of 50 nodes and does not
entitle customers to support from Pivotal.

Customers are able to upgrade from Pivotal HD Community edition to Pivotal HD
Enterprise edition to remove the node count limitation and to benefit from support
from Pivotal. Subscription costs from £5000 per month for a 3 year subscription.

Customers are also entitled to Pivotal HD Enterprise edition if they licence other
Pivotal One applications such a Pivotal GemFire, Pivotal HAWQ, etc

over a Wide Area Network is not viable, for example when customers have insufficient
network bandwidth or whilst they are awaiting the installation of appropriately accredited
connectivity.
In response to these challenges, Skyscape offer customers a room to utilise the secure,
high bandwidth and low latency network connections available at our Farnborough office.
Please note: No physical access to the datacentre is implied or offered within this service
description.

12. Appendix A: Pricing and Discounts
General
VAT
All pricing is shown exclusive of VAT.
Billing information
The customer will be billed on a monthly basis. The bill will be automated and will show
units consumed by duration, as determined by the relevant Service Description. When
applicable, credits will be identified and applied.
When required, itemised bills will be aggregated up from individual cost centres to show
consolidated consumption by customer organisation.
Where customers are reselling our services on the G-Cloud framework, they will be
responsible for providing management information to the Government Procurement
Service as set out in Clauses 10.1 to 10.4 of the G-Cloud Framework Agreement, and will
be responsible for meeting the Government Procurement Service Management Charge
as set out in Clauses 11.1 to 11.6 of the G-Cloud Framework agreement.
Discount Schemes
Customers can choose between either of the following two discount schemes, but Annual
Subscription (compute only) cannot be used in addition to Commitment Discount:
Commitment Discount (Available for all Services)
Customers can gain a discount off the standard rates by making a commitment for
minimum monthly amounts during a 12 month period. The commitment relates to spend
during the period (rather than VM’s or GB’s) as follows:
PO Value
Discount Level
<£250K
0%
£250K-£499K
9%
£500K-£749K
13%
£750K-£1,499k
16%
£1,500K +
19%
Customers will be required to raise a non-conditional purchase order for the required net
amount (after discount) which will entitle them to receive services up to the value of the
gross (pre-discount) amount. Customers will be required to break-down the commitment
with monthly spend amounts – any amount not consumed within an individual month will
not be rolled forward to a subsequent month. Discounts are per purchase order only.

Worked Example:
If you know that you will spend at least £300,000 per year with Skyscape, you can make
that commitment and receive an effective 9% discount. We would require a PO of
£273,000 (£300,000 less 9%) which will be payable even if you don’t consume that level
of Skyscape services within 12 months. Any consumption in excess of £300,000 will be
billable at the standard Skyscape rates unless a new commitment is made.
Annual Subscription Discount (Compute Only)
Customers can gain a discount off the standard rates by subscribing to pay for VM’s for a
minimum 12 month period. Skyscape will take the discount of the annualised hourly cost
of the VM which is payable in 12 equal monthly payments regardless of actual utilisation.
Subscription Period
Discount Level
12 Months
9%
Customers will be required to specify the quantity of VM’s (by VM size, service level and
impact level) that they wish to subscribe to. The Skyscape billing system will then
automatically offset the cost of VM’s which exactly match the size, service level and
impact level of specified VM’s. All other VM’s and ancillary services (e.g. additional
storage allocated to subscribed VM’s) will be billed at prevailing rates.
Worked Example:
If you know that you will be consuming a minimum of 20 Small, IL0 STANDARD VM’s for
at least one year, you can make an Annual Subscription to those 20 VM’s and receive an
effective 9% discount. The price of a Small, IL0 STANDARD VM is £0.19 per hour. This
would usually cost £1664.40 per year (£0.19 x 24 hours per day x 365 days), so 20 of
these VM’s would usually cost £33,288 per year. If you subscribe to these 20 VM’s for a
year you will be entitled to a 9% discount (£2995.92) and hence the annual cost would
reduce to £30,292.08 and you will be billed at £2524.34 per month. In the months that you
are using less than 20 of these VM’s, you will still be billed £2524.34. In the months that
you are using more than 20 of these VM’s, the additional VM’s will be billed at prevailing
hourly rates.
