AP Biology Summer Work 2015-2016 Welcome to AP Biology. You are registered to take AP Biology next year and that’s why you are receiving this letter. Don’t worry. This may look a lot worse than it is. I just wanted to get you all the information you’ll need and address some common questions. If you have any questions, please feel free to stop by my room or email me. I look forward to working with you during the next school year. I hope you have a wonderful summer break!!! I know what you are thinking….why a summer assignment? AP Biology is a vigorous, yet manageable and rewarding class. In order to meet the demands of the curriculum it is necessary for you to complete some work before you come back in August. The College Board Objectives outline for AP Biology is broad and deep. We have the months of September-April to complete the curriculum. The AP testing is in May. In order to cover the entire curriculum we must dive into our learning during the summer months. What are you required to do? Part #1 First, I would like to know who you are & how to get a hold of you so your first assignment is to send me an email and sign up for remind101.Here is what I would like you to email me at Paul.boll@wheelersburg.net before the end of June: Subject Line: AP Biology 15-16 Body: Your full name (& nickname that you go by if you have one) What grade will you be in? Why are you taking AP Biology? What do you hope to accomplish/gain? What do you like to do (hobbies, sports, music, interests)? Tell me a little about your family (Mom, Dad, Guardian, Siblings, Pets, how long you’ve lived in the area.) What are you most anxious about in AP Biology? Part #2: Vocabulary Photography Component Listed below is over one hundred important terms in the AP Biology curriculum. You must select 50 of these terms to use in your summer work. The first 25 will be due on the first day of class (100 points) and the second 25 (100 points) will be due exactly two weeks from the first day of class. Read the due dates at least three times so that there are no excuses or confusion as to when the words are due. You will need to take an ORIGINAL PICTURE and/or preserve a specimen of an example of the vocabulary term and describe how it fits the definition of the vocabulary term and the function or use of that item in nature. In order for the picture to be original, you must place an item that you own like a picture of yourself, cell phone, ring, or your own face beside that of the picture. It should also include the date that the picture was taken. You may choose any of the words below for your 50 pictures. You may turn them in as a PowerPoint presentation or in a scrapbook form, but not just posted in a notebook. 1. Adaptation of an animal 2. Adaptation of a plant 3. Primary producer 4. Actin 5. You must find one article that includes experimental work on each main concept that will be discussed in AP biology this year. You will have to do News and Views Assignments throughout the school year. The main topics discussed will be based on each of the following concepts (in no particular order): 1. Chemistry (biochemistry/cells/enzymes/photosynthesis…) 2. Genetics and Heredity 3. Evolution 4. Anatomy and Physiology (any system) 5. Ecology/Diversity/Environmental Issues 6. Plants (structure/function) 7. Animals (structure/function) Articles can be taken from journals, magazines, newspapers, or the internet. All sources must be current (2010 to 2015). In addition to reading the articles the following items are to be completed for the product that will be turned in: 1. Articles must include the name of the source and the date. Use the AP Central website. c. summarize the article in your own words (250 words) and explain its importance (or unimportance); you many need to do extra research on the topic to help with the summary. Include what you think was their hypotheses, independent variable, dependent variable, control group and experimental group. d. include a description of your reaction to the article 3. A glossary is to be included in your product. It should consist of at least 5 of the “science” vocabulary words found in the article; define and give an example or illustration. DUE DATE(S): The first News and Views Assignment will be due on the third day of school. It will count as your first assignment grade! Chose an article that deals with Chemistry (biochemistry/cells/enzymes/photosynthesis). The rest will be due as assigned, throughout the school year. PRODUCT ORGANIZATION AND POINTS SCORED 1.Your name, date, period, and teacher’s name must be displayed on the front of the article analysis. The product must be word processed. (If there is a problem with this contact me). (5 points) 2. Each article is to be analyzed as described in (a – d) listed above. (25 points) 3.
