Step 1: Decide what you want your cadets to know and be able to do at the end of your instruction. Write the objective(s) here: (G.) Cadets use a variety of study strategies. Step 2: Decide how you will know your cadets have learned what you taught. Select the method(s) you will use to ASSESS their understanding, knowledge, and skill: Quiz / test Performance task Fitness activity Worksheet Art activity Group project Oral questions Singing / song Group (squad) quiz Game Marching Discussion Essay/Paragraph Team Sport Other Step 3: Write out the steps you will use to get the cadets to learn the material you are presenting so they are successful on the assessment. A: Engaging Beginning – What will you do to get the cadets interested in your topic? (4 minutes) Quick write: Students will have 2 minutes to respond to the following prompt: "I study for tests by. . ." Pair- Share: After two minutes students will share with their elbow partner (1 min each) their response. B: Activate Prior Knowledge – How will you get cadets to show you what they already know about the topic? (6 minutes) Students will work with elbow partner to create a Circle Thinking Map to help then define good study habits. They can use the information from their quick write and pair-share to complete the thinking map. Each student must make their own copy of the thinking map. The map will become part of the student's notes for the lesson. C: Direct Instruction – What information will you present to your cadets through direct delivery? (20 minutes) Using the "M.U.R.D.E.R." study system handout and poster, the teacher will discuss each part of the system. During the instruction, students will be taught a "teacher created" song/rap to help students remember each part of the system. D: Group Practice – What questions / activities will cadets do in small groups to practice the skills you have just taught? (15 minutes) Students will be put in 6 groups. Each group will be given one of the parts of the "M.U.R.D.E.R." study system. Each group will have 20 minutes to discuss their part and create a poster that will be displayed in the classroom. Posters will be used for review at the beginning of the next class session. E: Independent Practice – What questions / activities will cadets do individually to practice the skills you have just taught? (15 minutes) For homework, students will create 3 x 5 flash cards (one for each part of the system). Cards will be used during preparation for the midterm/final/promotion test. F: Assessment: What will you now do to make sure that the “Message Given” is the “Message Received? How will you test cadets’ knowledge, skill, and understanding of this topic? (specifics) Assessment will take place during the second class session. At the beginning of the session, each group will take 2 minutes to present their posters. After presentation, students will work in groups of 3 - 4 to prepare a skit that illustrates the "M.U.R.D.E.R." study system. Students will have 15 minutes to prepare a 2 minute skit. Students will be graded on content, participation and creativity. G: Re-teaching: What steps will you take to help cadets who “do not get it” the first time the material is taught? Students who are having difficulty learning the material will be gathered together for a group discussion. In the discussion, the teacher should be able to identify and correct students’ understanding. At the conclusion of the discussion, students will be asked modify their skit or comic strip so that it is correct. Step 4: Gather the materials you need for the class.
