Westminster Christian Academy Seventh Grade Summer Reading 2014 As we work together with families to create lifelong learners, Westminster Christian Academy expects that our students will continue reading throughout the summer months. Therefore, over the summer all incoming 7th grade students will be required to read two books they have not previously read. Students must choose books from the attached reading list. It’s very important to us that students enjoy their book; therefore, we encourage them to find a book they love. They should feel free to abandon a book at any point and switch to a more enjoyable book. Students will write a review for each book on http://westminsterenglish7.blogspot.com/. The blog will be updated throughout the summer with student reviews, so check back to see what other Westminster readers are enjoying. This summer reading project will be included in each student’s first semester English grade. Please follow the instructions on the website carefully. Book #1: Read any book (FICTION OR NON-FICTION) from the reading list. The review should be submitted no later than Friday, June 27th. Book #2: Read any book (FICTION OR NON-FICTION) from the reading list. The review should be submitted no later than Friday, August 1st. Reading More This Summer? Students who wish to read additional books over the summer should feel free to leave as many book reviews online as they wish. We would love to have this site full of reviews from Westminster readers. All entries should be submitted no later than Friday, August 8th. If you have any additional questions or concerns and would like to speak with someone, please feel free to contact Heather Marsee at hmarsee@wcastl.org. We hope this opportunity for learning will be a blessing to your family this summer! -The Middle School Teaching Team Summer Reading Checklist Book #1 Book #2 Extra Books ___ Review submitted by Fri., June 27th ___ Review submitted by Fri., Aug. 1st ___ Review submitted by Fri., Aug. 8th Questions Frequently Asked By Students Q: I’m so excited! When am I able to start my summer reading? A: You are welcome to begin your summer reading TODAY! There is no start date. The only time constraints are that you submit your reviews no later than the due dates specified. Early work is accepted. Q: As a parent, I have a challenging, age-appropriate book that I would like my child to read, but it’s not on the list. Is that okay? A: We require students to read two books from our book list; however, if there is a specific book a parent would like their child to read, the parent should send an email to hmarsee@wcastl.org to receive approval. Please include the student’s name and the title of the book. After reading the 2 required books, students may read and write a review for any other parentapproved books. Q: How will I know if I submitted my review correctly? A: After completing the review form, press “submit” at the bottom of the page. A box will appear stating that your response has been recorded. Q: How will my summer reading project affect my English grade? A: The summer reading project will be equivalent to a test grade in English. Q: What happens if I turn in an assignment late? A: Late work will be penalized based on the length of time that it is overdue. Q: What if I have questions over the summer? A: You are welcome to email questions to Heather Marsee at hmarsee@wcastl.org, but it may take up to a week for a response. We hope to be able to answer the majority of questions before the summer begins so that you are well prepared to complete your summer reading project. Westminster Christian Academy Middle School Reading List Parents: While we have created a reading list full of interesting and well-written stories at appropriate reading levels, we recommend researching the individual books your son or daughter chooses. Sites such as www.commonsensemedia.org or www.amazon.com will help you to learn more about a book so that you may decide as a family on appropriateness of content.
