Purpose of job:
The postholder will carry out content development and experimental teaching, in order to develop a
protoype course to be launched as new blended learning offer in mid-2015. You will also traiun and lead
a small group of pioneering teachers in e-teaching.
Context and environment:
The British Council is the UK’s International Organisation for Cultural Relations. We have been teaching
English for more than 75 years, and are a leading education provider with a global track record. As well
as learners of English, we work with companies, governments, institutes, and teachers to provide learning
resources and language and skills programmes.
In India our well established English Language Centres reach 18,000 students a year in Delhi (and
Gurgaon), Chennai, and Kolkata. In order to bring English language courses to learners across India, we
are introducing courses that will be delivered via a variety of channels. The post holder’s key task will be
to build the prototype course, and demonstrate that it works and is optimum in terms of format, content,
and objectives. Core material already exists, and a technical platform will have been selected. The post
holder will carry out teaching trials, beginning with short lessons to volunteer learners, and progressing to
a series of full pilot courses. You will analyse results and present them to the project board, to enable
decision making. Eventually you will contribute to the post-pilot business plan.
The work can be done from Chennai or Delhi English Language Centres, and frequent travel will be
required, especially to the city in which first full pilot will take place.

Accountabilities:





Develop course structure, content and materials to deadline
Become an expert and an advocate of blended teaching
Lead a team of teachers to train up and become champions of blended teaching
Devise, carry out and evaluate teaching trials. Present results and contribute to decisions
Make key contribution to proof of concept of new business, launching successful prototype
Responsibilities
 managing people: lead team of up to 4 teachers, and liaise with volunteer learners
 work to agreed targets under guidance of project board, keeping everyone informed
 acquire necessary skills and knowledge, and inspire others with it
 Ensure validity and reliability of teaching trail results
Key relationships:
Internal
 5 member project board
 Blended team fellow members, including teachers, local manager and administrative support
 British Council Library manager and staff of 1st target city
 Wider English team (especially English Language Centres digital/Self Access team) in Chennai
and Delhi
 E-learning advisory teams and trainers
External
 Volunteer students, and first cohorts of paying customers

The post is paid at consultancy rate of 217,526 INR per 4 week (20 working days) period, pro-rated for
days worked. There is no holiday or sick pay. Time off can be agreed but is not paid. Regular travel will
be required within India.
This is a temporary assignment for 6 months, but may be renewed by mutual agreement.
The post is advertised externally in India among the professional ELT community. If existing British
Council staff members wish to be considered, then they would need to agree a temporary re-allocation of
duties with their line manager, and if successful, would be paid at their current rate (not as an external
consultant).
