BIOLOGY
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?
LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS
• Graduation Requirements for Science
• Three credits in science.—
• Two of the three required credits must have a laboratory
component.
• A student must earn one credit in Biology I and
• Two credits in equally rigorous courses.
• All students must take the Biology I EOC assessment.
• The statewide, standardized Biology I EOC assessment
constitutes 30 percent of the student’s final course grade.
• A student who earns an industry certification for which there
is a statewide college credit articulation agreement
approved by the State Board of Education may substitute
the certification for one science credit, except for Biology I.

BIOLOGY EOC
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THE EXAM?
EOC ADMINISTRATION
• The Biology EOC
• Is delivered via a computer-based testing (CBT) platform
called TestNav
• Is given in one 160-minute session with a 10-minute break
after the first 80 minutes.
• Has multiple forms with a maximum of 66 multiple-choice
items on each test form.
• Has a four-function calculator provided in the TestNav
platform.
• Has Periodic Table of the Elements provided in the TestNav
platform.
• Is provided with four-page, hard-copy work folders to use as
scratch paper.
EOC CONTENT
The Biology1 EOC Assessment measures student
achievement of the NGSSS in science, as outlined in the
Biology 1 course description.
•
Molecular and Cellular Biology
Students compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells;
differentiate between mitosis and meiosis; relate the structure
and function of the four major categories of biological
macromolecules; and differentiate the processes of
photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
•
Classification, Heredity, and Evolution
Students identify evidence that supports the scientific theory
of evolution; classify organisms into domains or kingdoms;
identify scientific explanations of the origin of life; determine
conditions required for natural selection; and analyze patterns
of inheritance.
•
Organisms, Populations, and Ecosystems
Students relate structure and function of organs and tissues in
plants and animals; evaluate factors contributing to changes
in population size; determine consequences of the loss of
biodiversity; and evaluate the impact of biotechnology.
EOC SCORES
• Results are reported using scale scores and achievement levels.
• Student success is indicated by Achievement Levels that range
from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest).
• The table above provides the scale score range for each
Achievement Level.
• Level 3 indicates satisfactory performance (passing).
• Scoring at or above Achievement Level 4 indicates that the
student is high achieving and has the potential to meet college readiness standards by the time the student graduates from high
school.

STATE EOC RESOURCES
• The Florida Achieves Website http://www.florida-achieves.com/
provides access to FCAT Explorer that features skills practice for
Biology1.
• Florida EOC Assessments Homepage http://fcat.fldoe.org/eoc/
provides a wealth of information about the assessment and serve
as a valuable resource to students, parents/guardians and
educators.
• Sample Questions and Answer Key Booklets are designed to help
students become familiar with the test by providing helpful hints
and offering practice answering questions in different formats.
Sample materials for EOC assessments are provided in the “Taking
the Assessments” section of http://fcat.fldoe.org/eoc/.
• Teachers, parents/guardians, and students can review the
Biology 1 EOC Assessment computer -based practice test, called
an ePAT. This tool is available online at
www.FLAssessments.com/ePAT.
