Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, ____

Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight, ____

Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth, ____

Turning and turning in the widening gyre ____
The falcon cannot hear the falconer; ____
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; ____
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, ____
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere ____
The ceremony of innocence is drowned; ____
The best lack all conviction, while the worst ____
Are full of passionate intensity. ____
Surely some revelation is at hand; ____
Surely the Second Coming is at hand. ____
The Second Coming! ____
Hardly are those words out ____
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi ____
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert ____
A shape with lion body and the head of a man, ____
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, ____
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it ____
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. ____
The darkness drops again; but now I know ____
That twenty centuries of stony sleep ____
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, ____
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, ____
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? ____
