Down from His Glory

(The Love Story of Christmas)

You may have heard me playing on my piano accordion the popular Italian a melody "O Sole Mio.” T his translates as “My Sunshine " and was written in

1898 by Giovanni Capurro, Eduardo di Capua and Alfredu Mazzucchi.

The famous hymn “Down from His Glory” was written by Swiss-born William

Emmanuel Booth-Clibborn (1893-1969) the grandson of William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army. In 1921, William Edmond Booth-Clibborn preached a successful tent revival in Lodi, California. Inspired by the results, he suggested that the revival party continue meetings further south and set up a tent in Holtville. After acquiring the necessary permits and lighting, they began services.

Sadly, heavy rains and low attendance literally quenched the fiery services.

Unable to pay the light bill for the week of disappointing meetings,

Booth-Clibborn and his comrades took temporary jobs as field hands, harvesting corn. The evangelist was forlorn by his failure and he sat down, crestfallen and dejected.

In this moment of self-pity, the Lord began to deal with him. As heaven-sent words began to flow in his spirit Booth-Clibborn began to sing the words of this great hymn to the tune “O Solo Mio”.

Down from His glory, Ever living story,

My God and Saviour came, And Jesus was His Name.

Born in a manger, To His own a stranger,

A Man of sorrows, tears and agony.

Chorus: O how I love Him! How I adore Him!

My breath, my sunshine, my all in all.

The great Creator became my Saviour,

And all God's fullness dwelleth in Him.

What condescension, Bringing us redemption;

That in the dead of night, Not one faint hope in sight,

God, gracious, tender, (in his mercy) Laid aside His splendour,

Stooping to woo, to win, to save my soul. [Refrain]

Without reluctance, Flesh and blood His substance,

He took the form of man, Revealed the hidden plan,

O glorious mystery Sacrifice of Calvary,

And now I know Thou art the great 'I Am'

The words of this hymn express beautifully the truth of how the son of God came down to earth to die on a cruel wooden cross for the sins of all mankind.

St Paul in his letter to the believers in Philippi said this: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

(Philippians 2:5-11)

Jesus gave the last drop of his life’s blood to redeem mankind. Will you give your life to the LORD Jesus? He gave his everything for you?
