2015 - 2016
Instructor: Mrs. Cheryl Red e-mail: cdred@comcast.net
Textbook : Otter’s High School Biology & Work Book
CK-12 Flexbook
The Biology Coloring Book – Robert D. Griffin
Supplies Needed:
Notebook
Quadrille ruled Lab Notebook
Ruler
Pencil/Pen
Color Pencils
Homework: The homework assignments will be the Lesson Review Questions at the end of each section. The Coloring Book sections assigned will also be checked. The workbook pages assigned will not be checked. These are a good source of study helps for the exam.
Tests: Test material will be taken from the textbook and the Biology Coloring Book. All vocabulary words are testable information. Any additional handouts given in class are also testable material unless the student is told otherwise.
Grading:
Homework will be graded 10, 5, 0 points only. Assignments turned in on time and mostly complete and correct earns a 10. Turned in on time and incomplete and messy earns a 5.
Turned in one week late and mostly complete and neat earns a 5. Anything else earns a 0. I will not accept any homework after the first week late except in the case of absences or when other arrangements were made. Please note – NEATNESS COUNTS!!! (in the homework and the lab notebook). Parents are responsible for correcting homework assignments. I will review the homework questions in class but I will not grade each question individually.
Parents, please ensure your student’s homework assignments are complete and graded.
Exams Seven exams and one final exam will be given during the semester. Correcting mistakes is a good way to learn, so you are encouraged to make corrections to your exams after they have been returned. You will be able to raise your grade up to 1 point for each corrected answer. Exams must be corrected and turned in 1 week after they are returned to the student to receive any extra credit. A comprehensive final exam will be given. It will count as two exam grades.
Lab Experiments will be conducted during class time. Students are to purchase a bound notebook to hold experimental data and lab reports. This notebook is available in the HEP
Bookstore. A pre-lab write up is required for each assigned lab. It is worth 10 lab points.
The homework section of the syllabus states which pre-labs are due and when. Lab books will
be taken up and graded on each test day. The homework section of the syllabus gives the labs due that day. Late labs will be graded 10 – 20 points lower. The grade will be determined by completeness and neatness. Grades will be assigned at the end of each semester based on the following:
Homework
Exams
Lab Book
10%
65%
25%
Final Exam Scored as 2 test grades
Parents are strongly urged to manage the use of the solutions and tests manual to insure proper usage.
Absences:
I realize that sometimes absences are unavoidable. If you know you will be absent ahead of time, please let me know and arrangements will be made for homework assignments to be accepted late with full credit. I will not grade off on homework assignments if you have a valid absence. If you are unable to make class, please have a parent e-mail me so I can pass any information along you might have missed. If you must miss a test, arrangements need to be made to take it the day you return to class.
Class Time
Class will be spent on lectures backed up by laboratory experiments, answering homework questions and testing. Reading assignments are given on the syllabus and should be completed before class. It is in your best interest to answer the On Your Own questions even though they are not turned in as homework. Check your work using the answers at the end of the chapter. We will discuss these in class.
Syllabus:
I have attached a syllabus for the course. This allows you to know pre-labs, reading assignments, homework, and due dates for homework assignments and labs. Bring your lab book every week. If you lose your syllabus please ask for another one. This syllabus is subject to change. Changes will be announced in class. If a major change is made a new syllabus will be posted on Teacher Ease in the Digital Locker.
