1. SITUATION.
a. General. The Ranger Challenge Event is to provide a challenging, military-skills
competition using BOLC-A task for the Corps of Cadets to enhance small unit leadership
qualities, develop teamwork and promote professional development, to include military
excellence in selected military skills within 8th BDE. The Ranger Challenge Competition will be
executed professionally, safely, and to the highest standard. It is designed to recognize the top
team from each of the three Tasks Force that will come to JBLM and compete in Viking
Decision, where the winner will represent 8th BDE at the Sandhurst Competition. 8th BDE is
responsible for ensuring that the Battalions know the Task and Standards of each event,
but it is the responsibility of the TF Host to come up with the Conditions and plan on how
to conduct each event, and the overall Ranger Challenge.

2. MISSION. 8th Brigade, conducts Ranger Challenge Competition at three predesignated locations. Each TF will compete in order to select the best team to represent
their TF to compete in the Viking Decision Competition.
3. EXECUTION.
a. Commander’s Intent. Provide a challenging, military-skills competition between all three
Task Force in order to send the best team to JBLM and compete in the 8th Brigade Viking
Decision.
Key Tasks:
1.
Flawless coordination of all elements during the planning, resourcing, and execution of
the competition.
2.
Conduct three (3) IPR’s to gauge progress leading up to the execution.
3.
Safe return of personnel to home station and the training area restored to original set.
4.
All three (3) TF’s complete with their Ranger Challenges NLT 30 NOV 12
Desired Effect: All teams arrive at their assigned Task Force with one nine man team and two
alternates. The event NCOIC flawlessly supervises the execution of all tasks. All teams compete
with an emphasis on healthy competition, the Warrior Ethos, and the Army Values. The winning
team is clearly defined. All personnel return to home station with all personnel and equipment.
Training area is sterilized and cleared of all hand receipts.
b. Concept of Operations.
The BDE is divided into three Task Forces (TF) for the competition (see annex A). 8th BDE will
have a senior NCO on-site at all three TF competitions. His main focus and responsibility is to
ensure that the TF is being run IAW BDE OPORD and same standards maintained across the
TF’s.

ALL EVENTS ARE INCORPORATED INTO THE 6.2 MILE MOVEMENT. THE APFT RUN
IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE OVERALL DISTANCE.
3.
Each TF CDR must request approval from the BDE Operations for any changes that
deviates from this OPORD 60 days out from the competition
4. Each School is allowed one (1) Team. Each Team consist of nine (9) Cadets with a
minimum of one (1) female team member, and at least one member from each MS Class
5. Teams may bring two (2) alternates. ALT’s will be located at the TOC, and transported to
the teams location. The transition if an injury occurs will all be observed by the TF CDR
and the 8th BDE Representative to ensure fairness, and the team will be assessed a
penalty
6. The following Host schools that have a partnership program (UAF, BSU, UNR) will have to
get BDE Commander approval for them to participate in Ranger Challenge
7. Any enrolled or contracted Cadet without a DA approved physical must have a
completed DA Form 3425R, Medical Fitness Statement, or medical records which meet
the minimum requirements set forth in CCR 145-1, Table 3-1
8. Competition will be executed by enrolled and contracted Army ROTC Cadets only (All
exceptions have to be approved by the BDE CSM).
10. APFT must be the first event. The layout of the Ranger Challenge is METT-TC and based
on the TF Commanders Guidance.
c. Task to Subordinate Units.
(1) 8th BDE:
(a) Main proponent for establishing all of the Ranger Challenge Tasks and, Standards. BDE
Operations has overall responsibility and authority to render decisions on any associated with
Ranger Challenge
(b) Will have one (1) representative at all three Ranger Challenges
(c) Will approve any waivers or changes to the course 30 days to start time.
(d) Will organize TF’s and designate the host school. (annex A)
(e) Will run a tie-breaker event if there is a tie within the TF
(f) Will run an event to decide who goes to Sandhurst, if funds are unavailable to bring the three
TF winners to JBLM, WA

(2) Hosting Universities (3):
(a) Conduct a 3-day head to head Competition for your Task Force: Phase 1-Arrival, Phase 2
Compete, and Phase 3- Depart
(b) Provide a Briefing board for each event. This may include the Task, Conditions, and
Standards
(c) Submit all Risk assessment to BDE HQ NLT D -15 days prior to the start of any
competition. Schools will complete one risk assessment per event, as well as an overall Risk
Assessment.
(d) Provide water, hot beverages/ fresh fruit (if appropriate), and all meal support if required for
other task force members.
(e) Coordinate for PAO coverage. All Ranger Challenges will be covered by a Media Source.
(f) Invite appropriate civilian and military dignitaries. Inform BDE of who has been invited then
follow up with attendees.
(g) Have an overall status board in your TOC for team standing throughout the competition. DO
NOT ALLOW anyone in your TOC (except VIPS). Data on team standings will not be released
until the TF Champion is named.
(h) Conduct Award ceremonies at the end of the competition Saturday night.
(i) Coordinate with participating universities for additional funding requirements.
(j) Conduct coordination meetings & IPRs with all schools in TF to include BDE.
(k) Coordinate funding and logistical support IAW the guidance and suspense.
(l) Make plans to assist overseas schools with lodging, meals, and other resources needed for
Ranger Challenge.
(m) Provide BDE with overall standing to include scores on each event upon completion of the
competition.
(n) Submit funding requests through BDE S4 NLT D -45 days prior to the event for upcoming
FY competition

(b) Team time will start with the first event (APFT) and is continuous until the team is finished
(c) Admin time is anytime a team has to stop for any reason out of their control, a second clock
will keep track of all admin time and be subtracted from overall time once complete.
(d) Tie breaker rule: The two teams that are in a points tie within a TF will use their overall time
as the tie-breaker.
(In the event that two teams in the same TF are still in a tie after looking at their overall
times, then the BDE Rep will an additional event with the two teams to decide who will
represent the TF in Viking Decision).

(5) Penalties
Each event is its own event within Ranger Challenge. NCOIC’s (Graders) of each station need
to have a start and finish time of each team going through there station and then rank them in
1st place to last place. NOCIC’s have the power to stop a team for safety or if he sees an unsafe
act he will stop the squad and get them back into a safe situation. During all corrections from the
NCOIC, the squads event time is still running. (Whatever time it takes for the NCOIC to
correct the problem or deficiency is the penalty).
(6) Alternates
(a) Alternate cadets: when a Team member can no longer continue it will be decided by the TF
CDR and the 8th BDE Representative to stop the team, and call the alternate from the TOC to
their location. Once the Alternate has reached their location the team can continue on. Using
your Alternate is an automatic 15 minute penalty.
(b) You cannot finish this competition without one (1) female cadet crossing the finish line with
the rest of the team, and at least eight (8) members. Less than eight and the team will be disqualified.
(7) Appeals and Protest
(a) The TF CDR and TF SMI are the final judges on all matters at the Ranger Competition.
(8) Uniform and packing list

Packing List)

(9) IPR’s / Teleconference’s
All station NCOIC’s, PMS’s, SMI’s and TF CDR will attend all IPR’s or Teleconferences
scheduled for their TF.

(10) During the Competition
(a) There will be absolutely no physical contact between unit members and their team once the
competition begins, except in case of an emergency. They can only cheer (NO Coaching) and
run along side of the team without any contact. Violations of this rule may cause a team to be
disqualified.
(b) The competition NCOIC and OIC have the authority to disqualify an individual or a team if
any member (including coaches and/ or cadre) deliberately violates the spirit of the competition
by abusing or ignoring event rules to gain an advantage. (c) The competition NCOIC and OIC
are the final judges on all Appeals and Protest. This measure will be covered in detail in Annex
F (Competition Rules and Scoring Procedures).
(11) Safety
(a) The Risk Assessment for each event and an overall Ranger Challenge will be completed
NLT D -30 days prior to the start of any competition and forwarded to Brigade Operations for
filing.
(b) Incorporate Risk Management/ Reduction into all training and competitions.
(c) Incorporate Cadet buddy aid training into all events.
(d) Event OIC/NCOIC will conduct safety briefings on the specific hazards for each event the
night prior to the start of competition.
(d) Report all injuries requiring hospitalization to Brigade HQ using Policy 2-12, Serious Incident
Reporting (SIR).
(e) Ensure proper and certified medical support and evacuation capabilities are available during
the entire competition.
(f) Contact local Hospital and brief them on number of Cadets and possible injuries that are
associated with Ranger Challenge
(g) Identify civilian/military assets to assist in MEDEVACS (air and ground).
(h) Ensure warming tents or similar areas are available, if needed.
(i) Ensure Cadets have dry and appropriate clothing as part of competition uniform
requirements.
(j) Ensure there are proper water points along the route and at each station for Cadets to refill
water if needed

4. SUSTAINMENT.
(1) Lodging:
(a) CC will support two nights lodging for those schools which depart on Friday. One additional
night lodging is authorized for UAF, UG and UH depending on their travel and acclimatization
requirements.
a. UAF, UG, UH are authorized to arrive one day early for acclimatization.
b. UAF, UG, UH must schedule return flights for earliest departure upon completion of
competition/travel time back to the airport from the Ranger Challenge location.
(b) Host Universities will coordinate the use of facilities such as Armories, military training
areas, or local camp grounds to minimize costs. Hotel lodging is not authorized during
competition.
(c) If there is an anticipated cost associated with lodging (i.e. Armory fees), the Host University
will submit a request for funding through the BDE S4 NLT D -45 days prior. Use the request
email memorandum format found in Annex C.
(d) Any costs associated with cadre lodging (to include per person Armory fees) will be
indicated on the individual cadre DTS travel request. Cadre lodging costs cannot be included
on the funding request memorandum. Coaches will stay in the same environment as
Cadets. Commercial hotel is not authorized for cadre or Cadets.
(2) Meals:
(a) Host Universities will coordinate for all meals beginning with Friday dinner, through Sunday
breakfast. Schools that are authorized to arrive early are Hawaii, Guam and Alaska (Thursday
vs Friday). TF host need to ensure a meal plan for Cadets arriving early is established. CC will
fund up to $24.00 per day per Cadet (this amount is subject to change each year, to include
price of MRE), with no more than two hot meals. Coordinate meal support thru BDE S4 who will
forward to CC NLT 45 days prior IAW normal procedures. Support options include catering via
CC IMPAC purchase, MIPR if on military installation, and MREs. Annex C must be submitted
electronically.
(b) Any travel meal required will be arranged through the school utilizing purchase request.

(c) Participating universities will coordinate through the BDE S4, NLT D -45 days prior for any
meals required during travel. Support options include CC IMPAC purchase, meal tickets, and
MREs. If requesting meal tickets, ensure the vendor will accept them. Annex C

(d) Hosting universities must brief cadre meal plan, during their first IPR. Participating cadre
must clearly understand meal entitlement(s).
(1) All Personnel traveling on TDY will use the Ranger Challenge Fund site within DTS. If
you have any questions, contact Gloria from the S-4 shop and she will assist you. Her number is

d. Supply / Class I.

Uniformity and Serviceability:
a. The following exceptions will be allowed:
(1) Left hand Cadets may adjust their LCE to have their pouches worn differently.

b. Teams will not be penalized because equipment or uniform is old or worn/ faded; the
key point is accountability.

Helmet illustration: The helmet, with chin strap fastened, will be worn at all times during THE
ENTIRE competition. The helmet will be marked in the following manner

INITIALS
NOTE: The helmet will be marked on the front and back with 100mph tape. The Cadet’s
Schools initials will be marked on the 100mph with a black permanent marker.
M16A2 Rifle Rubber Duck: Each individual will carry an M16A2 Rubber Duck rifle with a sling,
along with a piece of 100 mph tape on both sides of the buttstock of the weapon with school
initials written on it.
Uniform: Uniforms and boots are to be properly fitted, and serviceable. Insignia will be worn
throughout the competition by teams. Nomex flight gloves are authorized, but not for the initial
inspection. Camel backs’ are authorized as a addition but not meant to be a replacement for
the canteens.
Medical Alert Tags: Cadets that need special medical attention or are previous cold/heat
weather injuries will wear the proper colored zipties on the left side as worn of the helmet band
just above the left eye. (See Diagram 1)

NOTE: During execution of all tasks and throughout movement, all uniform items, to include

and trousers will be bloused for the inspections). If the task calls for a modification of uniform or
equipment, the change will be made at the test site.

ANNEX C
ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST (APFT)
TASK:
Ranger Challenge Competitors will conduct the Army Physical Fitness Test
IAW TC 3-22.30. The APFT will be conducted IAW TC 3-22.30. The grading will be
recorded on a DA Form 705, Army Physical Fitness Score Card. All Cadets must
score 210 points, with a minimum of 70 points in each event. Standard for 70 points
are: PU Male-49 / Female-25; SU M/F- 59; RUN M-15:12 F-18:06. If a Cadet
scores less than 70 points in any event that Cadet’s total points for APFT will
be zero.
STANDARDS
1. The APFT will be the first event of the Ranger Challenge competition.
2. An APFT briefing will be given to all team members so they hear and see the
standards.
3. The order of events will be the push-up, the sit-up followed by the 2-mile run.
4. Uniform consist of; running shoes, ACU bottoms, team Shirt or Army issue tan
undershirt.
5. Grading will be conducted by calibrated cadre only. Score each Cadet using the
Army standard for 17-21 M/F. Only graders and the team conducting the event
will be in the grading area unless otherwise authorized by TF SMI.
6. TF Host will determine if artificial lighting is needed for proper grading and
supervision of this event. Use light generators vs. headlights from vehicles.
7. Scoring- If more than one team ties for 1st place they will share the points
between the teams

ANNEX D
MAP READING
TASK
Each team member will be given one (1) 10-question test, one map, a protractor and
a #2 pencil. All personnel will work independently and try to finish as many map
reading questions as possible in 20 minutes.

ANNEX E
LAND NAVIGATION
TASK:
During Land Navigation each team will be broken down into (3) three teams. Each
team must stay together throughout the land navigation course. Time will not stop for
a squad until all teams have linked up at the finish point and come across the finish
line together.
STANDARDS
1. Each Squad must locate at least 5/9 in one hour
2. Each point is no less than 800 meters but no more than 1000 meters
3. Squads that report back under the one (1) hour time limit without all correct
points will have their remaining time to find more points or wait till their hour
finishes before moving to the next event
4. Rucksacks will be worn during this event
5. Water points will be at key intersections on the course
6. 2-qt canteens will be topped off before navigating
7. Squad will be broken down into (3) three teams of (3) three
8. All (9) nine members of the team must be back before grade sheet is turned in
9. Scoring- Based on fastest time, and by which team turned in their grade
sheet first.
Safety: Ranger Challenge, Cadre-In-Charge (CIC) will submit a Risk Assessment for
this site. The site will be visited and inspected by safety officers prior to the competition.

ANNEX F
FIRST AID
TASK:
Identifies one (1) member of Squad or a dummy as casualty during the First Aid Event and call
in a 9-line MEDEVAC; the remaining Cadets must subsequently move casualty and equipment
to the HLZ. Assess the casualty and identify the injury. Casualty may have an Airway,
Breathing or Bleeding related injury. Treatment of casualty will be modeled after the Soldier First
Responder (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) treatment methodology.
STANDARDS
1. Treat the casualty’s injuries.
2. Call in a 9-Line MEDEVAC: IAW FM 21-11.
3. Prepare casualty for movement and then proceed to the HLZ.
4. Scoring- Fastest time from the Cadet assessing the casualty and time stopping
when the 9-Line has been called-in.

Ranger Challenge, Cadre-In-Charge (CIC) will submit a Risk Assessment for this
site. The site will be visited and inspected by safety officers prior to the
competition.

ANNEX G
SINGLE ROPE BRIDGE
TASK:
During daylight hours under existing weather conditions, teams will construct a one-rope bridge
capable of safely transferring the team and its equipment across a water obstacle using their
equipment: a 120-foot standard Army issue rope, sling rope (rappel seat), and carabineer. At a
field location with a natural or man-made constructed obstacle, distance must be between 40 to
60 feet across. Squads must transport the two (2) full five (5) gallon water cans and two (2)
cases of MREs across a Rope Bridge. The first and last member will not be allowed to carry
these items while crossing the “water” obstacle.
STANDARDS
1. “Speed tighteners that are bought over the counter” (metal, wooden, plastic, etc.) are
not allowed,
2. Pulley system can be created and used.
3. Crossing site must permit each team adequate space to take slack out of the rope
without interference and under comparable terrain conditions.
4. Evaluators must check each Cadet’s rappel seat before they cross the rope bridge
5. All knots come out of ropes before moving on to the next event
6. Penalties- Any time the evaluator has to stop the team for any corrections that is the
penalty.
7. Evaluator can stop the team at anytime for any unsafe act and have them start from a
safe starting position.

LEADER REACTION COURSE
TASK:
Ranger Challenge Teams will have 15 minutes to move through the obstacle utilizing
the most efficient technique identified by the team and to solve the situation using
teamwork
STANDARDS:
1. Uniform- Helmet, LBV, Weapon
2. Team cannot move onto the next event until all team members have completed
the LRC to standard or the 15 minutes has elapsed
3. If a participant touches the ground, that individual must start over from the
beginning.

SITUATION AWARENESS
TASK:
Teams will be notified at the start of the competition that throughout the Ranger
challenge course, there will be “items” Cadets will be required to recall at some point
during the course.
STANDARDS
1. Each chip must be placed at the point the item was seen on the terrain model. All
items should be in close proximity to an event or major feature on the course.
2. During the assessment time there is to be no interaction between the spectators/
cadre/ instructors and the Team.
3. Use of recording device or camera is prohibited and the team will be disqualified.
4. Scoring- Fastest team through will be awarded highest point and down

1. Each Team will attempt to solve a task, as briefed, in a given time. Each Team will
be required to utilize critical thinking skills, teamwork and stamina in order to complete
the task as quickly as possible.

Assemble and a Functions check on either the M4/M16 weapon system in accordance

EQUIPMENT INSPECTION
TASK:
During the Ranger Challenge Course all equipment will be checked IAW the Ranger
Challenge packing list (Annex B) at the end of the course or item.
STANDARDS
1. Cadets can add to but not take away from the packing list
2. Packing list goes by IAW with AR 670-1 ( No pink, Realtree, etc…)
3. If cadet is in doubt ask SMI, if SMI is in doubt take picture and send to 8 th BDE
