providing range of motion exercises, providing comfort care to the dying, and
documentation of care given.
What does the CNA Program provide for the student?
 This program provides preparation for students to take the State of Alaska Certified
Nurse Assistant exam to become a licensed CNA.
 Students may earn up to 8 college credits at the University Of Alaska Anchorage

Clinical Experience Grading Guidelines
Please carefully review the areas that you will be graded on before you go to clinical so you are
aware of the expectations.
Professionalism - 20 pts:
Remember to behave professionally whenever you are at the clinical site, whether you are on the
floor working, on a break, eating lunch or in the bathroom. This means that when you arrive to
the site, ensure you are ready to work! You have already eaten, your coat is removed, your hair
up and/or pinned up, your smock is on, your equipment ready, and your personal items stowed in
your bags. This also means you use professional speech, even if you think no one else is around.
No slang or foul language should be used. No loud talking or laughing in the hallways. Always
speak respectfully about patients and co-workers and students
Patient care completed thoroughly and safety - 20 pts:
Ensure that you complete all tasks that are assigned (this means not forgetting oral care or cath
care, etc). Maintain patient safety at all times (reporting abnormals promptly, ensuring call lights
are in place, bed rails up and following instructors completely, clarifying the instructor if her
instructions conflict with staff instructions, etc.).
Confidentiality and privacy -20 pts:
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Speak quietly in the hallways when reporting so other
patients and family members can’t hear, use room numbers when possible rather than names,
don’t give report to RN’s in other patient rooms. Preserve privacy by using curtains and closing
doors, etc.
Infection control and body mechanics – 20 pts:
Always use standard precautions, and any special precautions if ordered. Use good hand-washing
and hand hygiene. Remember to protect your back by bending your knees and keeping your back
straight when lifting. Don’t work over side rails. Raise the bed to give proper care.
Team effort/self-direction/reporting to RN – 20 pts:
Complete assigned tasks without instructor reminders, follow the directions on supplied handouts,
be a self-starter: find things to do if your assigned care tasks are done, and help each other
complete tasks. Complete all charting in a timely manner.
