Mathematics at the Technology Center of DuPage • • • • James P. Dildine – TCD Core subject liaison – mathematics TCD projects Formerly module developer and workshop presenter – MSTE • Past projects Mathematics at TCD • Increase opportunities for students to gain competence in mathematics using technology. • Introduce technological tools to instructors and students to help incorporate mathematics within program areas. Examples • MSTE-created interactive mathematics modules and tutorials. • Home school instructor development of modules with focus in mathematics & science. • TCD instructor and student creation of modules and activities to enhance program area learning opportunities. In The Beginning….. MSTE Graduate Students developed modules based on problem-situations from TCD Instructors. Interactive Mathematics Modules • Instructors identify students with difficulty in math concepts and direct them to web-site tutorials or application-based modules. Students work individually yet interact with other students. • Math activities are relevant to TCD program areas and math classes at sending schools by engaging students in a problem-solving environment. • Bolt-circle Diameter. • Cup & CAD module. • Moving man. Bolt-Circle Diameter Module Cup & CAD Modules Getting the teachers involved…..MST day II April 23, 1999 Teachers from the sending schools joined forces with TCD instructors. They enrolled in UIUC courses based at TCD during the summer. Teachers created modules for use in their own classrooms. Math & Science Instructors • Modules created by TCD-area (DuPage) math and science instructors in courses conducted at TCD by members of MSTE. Web-based interactive, multi-disciplinary, and applicationdriven modules. • Dan Tews, Franklin middle school, Wheaton Slope of A linear equation (a là moving man). • Kathy Deckys, Cowlishaw elementary, Naperville - Mealworms. • B. Carson & T. Mickley, Lake Park West HS – Linear relations and constant velocity. TCD Instructor Development • Fred Dittmann – TCD - excel spreadsheet & Auto battery load test. • Jim Krudl & Dominic Pacenti – TCD Engine classification & measurement project. • Luciano Sestito – TCD - Solid creation and 3 D rotation in AutoCad. And….Let’s not forget the students…. Several Students and Groups of Students at TCD have created materials, resources, and presentations that showcase their involvement in program area goal completion. Many students completed these tasks in conjunction with modules developed by their teachers. Student Development & Involvement • Students use technology – – – – – Digital cameras Web page design AutoCAD SpreadSheet Solutions • Students Use Modules • Showcase their work and complete goals. • Students gain ownership of material, and engage in problem solving experiences, and decision making situations. Future • More Instructors enrolling in courses and creating technology intensive modules incorporating mathematics (fall ’99 and spring ’00). • More student development and involvement with modules. • Reach more TCD program areas with more modules and activities.
