Developing a Method for Gas Analysis Using the GC






HP 6890 GC analyzes the chemical makeup of a given gas sample by either:
TCD (temperature conductivity detector, front)
ECD (electron capture detector, back) to.
There is no autosampler for this machine
All samples must be injected manually into one of the two injection ports
Located on the top left of the machine.
TCD Coulmn:
 The TCD is connected to the Supelco Carbonex-1010 PLOT (Cat. No. 25467)
capillary column.
 This column is capable of measuring:
o Hydrogen
o Oxygen
o Nitrogen
o Carbon monoxide
o Methane
o Carbon dioxide
o Acetylene
o Ethylene
o Ethane
 Dimensions are: 30 m x 0.53 mm I.D.
 Maximum temperature of 250oC.
 Helium or argon is used as the carrier gas
 See supelco product information for more details
TCD Protocol:
1. The sample is injected in the injector/inlet port
2. It travels along the length of the column
3. It bonds to the adhesive capillary surface and to each other.
4. Keep the flow and temperature constant
5. Optimize the GC performance and gas separation by adjusting:
a. Reference gas flow rate
b. Oven temperature
c. Injection temperature
d. Detection temperature
e. Carrier gas.
