AP Chemistry Summer Packet for Felix Varela Sr. High
2013-2014
Congratulations on your admission into AP Chemistry at Felix Varela Senior High
School! I am looking forward to a wonderful year with all of you. In order to
guarantee that we have a great start, you will need to complete some review
exercises this summer. I am looking forward to seeing you in August.
Ms. Casal
Part A
You will be using a computer based program from Indiana University called CALM.
which has questions to help you review some of the topics covered in the first half of
Honors Chemistry. The online program generates questions for each student based on
the topics that I have selected, some are multiple choice and some require fill in the
blanks. There are a total of 70 questions that cover concepts and calculations at
different levels of difficulty. If you need support, the program will provide clues to help
you answer the questions or you can use the textbook provided for the summer
assignment. The information covered here appears in the first three chapters of your AP
Chem textbook. The assignment is due the first week of school and it is worth 4 grades.

Part B
The first week of school, we will cover several topics that require memorization on your
part:
1. Polyatomic Ions (including name, symbol and charge)
2. Variable Valences for Transition Metals
3. Rules for Naming Acids
4. Inorganic Nomenclature Rules
5. The Solubility Rules
6. Determining Oxidation Numbers
7. Strong acids and strong bases.
Besides using your book, here are some good resources to find this information. Some
of you may learn by creating flash cards others may choose to make a song or a
mnemonic device. Use whatever works best for you.
o Memorize the Common Monoatomic Ions, the Common Variable charge metals and
the Polyatomic Ions. To study print the 3 tables located at:
http://www.chymist.com/Formula%20writing%20tables.pdf
o Review the rules for Naming Acids and the Rules for Naming Inorganic substances.
https://www.tracy.k12.ca.us/sites/jwaggle/Shared%20Documents/Ion_Charts.pdf
o Solubility Rules
http://www.files.chem.vt.edu/RVGS/ACT/notes/solubility_rules.html
o Rules for Determining Oxidation Numbers
http://www.files.chem.vt.edu/RVGS/ACT/notes/oxidation_numbers.html
o Memorize strong acids HCl,HNO3, H2SO4, HBr, HI, HClO4
o Memorize strong bases LiOH, NaOH, KOH,RbOH, CsOH (Grp 1 (1A)), also
Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, Sr(OH)2 but not very soluble.
NaOH and KOH are most common.
