Science Glossary (Vision Learning Inc.) •This app is available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad •Cost: Free •This app is geared towards grade 9 - 12 or post-secondary students. It consists of an extensive glossary of scientific terms for environmental science, chemistry, biology, physics, and astronomy. The glossary also includes biographies of scientists . Within the definition of terms or biography, there are further links that the students can follow that will explain other terminology that is related to the glossary term being searched. The application also connects to modules of various units in science (ex. acids and bases) that connect directly to the online resources and supports for that unit of study on the Vision Learning Website. If students are not able to get WiFi in the school, this poses a major problem. •I found this app extremely user friendly and contained useful and grade level appropriate material. The Chemical Touch: Lite Edition •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This app is appropriate for grade 9 - 12 students. It is a periodic table of elements that shows the various physical and chemical properties of each element on the table. Students can search the atomic masses, densities, melting and boiling points, etc. of each element. There is also a preferred language option (perfect for EAL students), and a link to Wikipedia (WiFi is needed for this). It is an application that can remain quite basic for younger students in science (grade 9,10) but also has access to relevant and important information for students in grade 11 or 12 chemistry. •I found this app easy to use and well organized so that students are not presented with content that they do not understand, unless they choose to search for it. Experimenter •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application consists of several science (specifically chemistry) related experiments and demos. The application describes each experiment/dem and also includes a list of materials and instructions for how individuals can perform the experiments themselves, safety concerns of each experiment, and an explanation of "How it works." Students can also watch videoss of each experiment to see what happens when the experiment is carried out. •This app was very entertaining (as it also contains a blooper reel of experiments gone bad!) and easy to use, but limited in the number of demos presented. However, almost each of the experiments are based on content in the grade 11 or 12 Manitoba Chemistry curriculum. iLab: Quick Timer •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This app is a simple one, but often necessary in a science lab activity. The application allows students to use their device to obtain timed data (both counting up or down) . The application has a quick study tutorial on how to use the application. Features of the application also include alert options to let the students know when the designated time is reached and a timer repeat feature (when multiple timed trials need to be carried out). •This app is very easy to use and would be appropriate for all grade levels. Ions - Chemistry Polyatomic Ions •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application contains a list of approximately 40 common polyatomic ions. The list of ions is alphabetized according to the ions' polyatomic names. Selecting one of the ions shows you the chemical formula and charge of that ion. Students can also link to Wikipedia (WiFi access would be needed) for more information about that specific ion. The application also features 3 quizzes (multiple chocice) where students can test their knowledge of the ions in symbolic form. There is also a flash card component that contains 4 stacks of cards that allow the user to practice going back and forth between the polyatomic name ad formula. •This app is perfect for grade 11 and 12 chemistry students . Unit Converision •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application is a must for both math and science class rooms. It features unit conversions in several different areas of measurement: prssure, metric, time, temperature, power, energy, mole, pixel, weight, volume, speed, area, degree/radian, and byte. Students can select the type of conversion they would like to do, select the starting unit of measurement, and then choose the type of measuremtn of the desired conversion. I'm sure that some teachers would not like this app, as certain conversions (that are based on curriculum outcomes) can be carried out without knowing the "written/mental" reasoning for this conversion. •This app is very user friendly and would be appropriate in the middle years/senior years grade levels. O=Chem •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application is an excellent resource for grade 11 chemistry students and post-secondary chemistry students. The application feature common functional groups learned in organic chemistry. Users can select a functional group (by name) and then the structural formula for the functional group will show. Users can switch between novice and pro categories. •This app is basic and simplistic, but would definitely be an asset to students as they work through the organic chemistry unit. Science House •This app is available for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad •Cost: Free •This application contains several episodes of science experiments, demos, or activities. The user can select a category of episodes (ex. chemistry, combustion, convection, density, engineering, fire, gas, etc.) The se mini movies are engaging and a perfect way to incorporate media into the classroom that is content appropriate. Each movie also provides a written explanation of the experiment and the materials you would need for the experiment, •This application is suitable for all grade levels, but most of the experiemts carried out are geared towards the science outcomes covered in grades 9 - 12 general and specific (biology, chemistry, physics) science classrooms. A+ Flashcards Study Helper •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application is suitable for all grade levels. It is a simple way for students to review content in any area. Users can type in a question and then an answer based on any subject. The user then adds it to the stack . Once all the cards have been made, the user can quiz themselves. This is great in a science classroom where there is a great deal of new terminology that needs to be learned on a daily basis. As with each subject area, there is a 'language' that needs to be learned to be successful in the classroom. This is an easy way for students to literally have the terms at their fingertips and practice learning concepts and vocabulary. •This app is simplistic, but would definitely be an asset to students in all subject areas. Google Translate •This app is available for iPhone and iPod touch •Cost: Free •This application is a great resource for all grade levels. Users can type in a word or phrase in English and translate it in almost any language. Students can also record the word or phrase and have it translated back. Again, WiFi access would be needed for students to be able to use this app. •Our school has changed over the past 10 years - it has become more diverse, both culturally and linguistically. This application would be useful to any student who is learning English as an Additional language.
