Course Description: Algebra IIA
This course focuses on fundamental mathematical concepts, including quadratic, polynomial and radical equations, linear functions and their graphs, systems of linear equations, functions and their properties, and matrices. Activities include solving problems and using appropriate technological tools.
Course Objectives:
1.
Perform mathematical operations with numbers and exponents.
2.
Simplify algebraic expressions by performing mathematical operations.
3.
Solve and graph linear equations, inequalities and quadratic equations.
4.
Solve and graph systems of equations with two or three variables.
5.
Solve simple problems involving algebraic, exponential, and trigonometric functions.
6.
Apply matrix methods to solve a linear system of equations.

Students should own or have access to these necessary course materials and resources:
Pencils, erasers, large notebook for course (to hold ALL notes AND homework), colored pen for grading individual work, graph paper, loose-leaf paper, composition book for warm-ups, three-ring fastener folder to keep handouts and notes
Recommended: TI-Nspire CX graphing calculator (Can buy online. Contact me with questions) and ruler

Rules and Expectations
In order to promote a healthy and engaging learning environment, we need to follow classroom procedures and policies. Below I have outlined my expectations for our class (subject to change).
1.
Come prepared with all materials.
2.
Be to class on time. Three tardies will result in a detention with the teacher
3.
Cell phones must be turned on silent and kept out of sight unless otherwise notified.
4.
Students will be expected to participate in class discussions, review of assignments, brainstorming, etc. There will be absolutely no sleeping, or placing of the head down
5.
Raising hands is encouraged, but when a question is asked to the entire class, feel free to yell out answers.
6.
Students are expected to act in a respectful, adult manner at all times. This means no talking during instruction or when another student is talking. Absolutely NO TALKING during tests or quizzes for any reason. Doing so will result in a zero.
7.
Students may leave their seat if needing to sharpen a pencil, blow their nose, or throw something away. However, to leave the room you must raise your hand. Here are the hand signals 1. You have a question or are answering a question pertaining to the lesson 2. You need me to come there 3. You need to use the restroom. If you are allowed to use the restroom, then please take the restroom pass at the front of the room. Only one person in the hallway at once.
8.
Students must complete class work independently. No copying is allowed.
9.
Clean up your work area before dismissal.
10.
There will be no food allowed in the classroom, but water is allowed.
11.
Don’t complain about my rules, but please feel free to ask about them.
12.
Students must treat the class like it’s their job. No additional assignments will be given to boost a grade. All assignments must have student’s name, date, and full assignment written down on their homework, otherwise it will result in lost points.
13.
If there is down time, you must always bring something with you to work on when you are finished with the current assignment. I don’t believe in giving you extra work if you get done with all of yours, but I would love if you were interested in learning more. In that event, I will provide you with other learning materials. Otherwise, you may do something on your own, or I may ask you to help me around the classroom.
General sequence of consequences for poor choices
1st time – Verbal warning
2nd time – Conference with student
3rd time – Parent contact (phone, e-mail, or card sent home)
4th time – Teacher detention
5th time – Office Referral which may lead to Parent/Student/Dean/Teacher conference
***If your behavior is highly disruptive, disrespectful, or dangerous you will be removed from the classroom immediately.
Absent/Late Work Policy
1.
Each day an assignment or project is late 20% will be reduced from the final grade.
2.
Late work will only be accepted for up to 4 days after the due date (20% off each day it is late). Instructor reserves the right to assign an alternative assignment if the original assignment has already been discussed, graded, and returned.
3.
If absent, you have the same amount of days you were absent, plus one, to complete missing work to receive full credit (up to
5 days).
4.
If you are absent check the instructor website to see what you missed and obtain the documents you need to complete the work. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and ensure it is made up on your own time ! This means before school, after school, or during down time in class.
Homework Policy
Homework will be given every day and you are expected to complete the homework by the next class meeting. Homework will be graded on effort out of 10 points. You can leave your homework in your notebook. There will be a homework quiz about once every two weeks where I will ask you to take out your notebook and copy down a certain homework problem.
Academic Integrity
Cheating is not tolerated at the Early Career Academy. Students who choose to cheat may expect a variety of consequences, including, but not limited to, loss of grade, suspension, or loss of privilege. Consequences will be at the discretion of the instructor involved and will be discussed with the student, parent(s), and administrators.
