Watkins Memorial High School Physical Education Rules, Expectations, and Procedures Instructors: Mr. Jeff Severino jseverino@laca.org Mrs. Holly Owens howens@laca.org Course Description: Physical Education is an important part of the educational process. Physical Education promotes a positive attitude towards active lifestyles through fitness, skill development, participation in physical activities, and good health practices. Our goal is for students to leave with the knowledge, understanding and awareness of the value PE has to individual growth and development, both mentally and physically. We believe that that being active everyday will help students develop good exercise habits which leads to lower chances of developing diseases that affect the body. Such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure. Course Objectives: 1. To develop an understanding of rule, concepts and strategies of physical 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. activities and sports that includes individual, group and fitness experiences. To develop physical and social skills that allow personal fulfillment in leisure time. To establish a foundation and develop an awareness of the importance of physical well-being. To provide participation is a wide variety of physical activities and sports to identify areas of enjoyment and benefit. To demonstrate cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. Recognize, respect and provide for individual differences in students Locker Room Rules 1. Girls - needs to bring in a combination lock for their locker. No key locks please. We have had issues with the arrows and the word locks so we recommend a master lock combination lock. Each girl is issued a locker for the storage of his/her PE clothes. Students are not to share lockers or combinations. Respect others and their property. You are 1 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. responsible for making sure your locker is LOCKED every time you leave the locker room. 2. Boys- we do not have enough lockers for all the classes at this time. Therefore, you may not keep your clothes in PE locker-room. You can use the lockers but cannot keep locks on them. You are permitted to use your hall lockers for your clothes but keep in mind we will not allow you to get them for class. Come prepared to class with your PE clothes. No food or beverages in the gym or locker rooms. Candy and gum are prohibited. Ownership of lockers is maintained by the school district. They are subject to inspection at any time. Please keep your valuables at home. No horseplay in the locker room No glass perfume or cologne bottles. Class Rules and Procedures 1. You need to be past the double doors by the time the tardy bell rings. Once the bell rings students will have 4 minutes to change. If you are not in your squad line 4 minutes after the bell you will be considered tardy. 2. Sit in your squad lines for attendance, warm up, stretch, explanation of activity, activity, closure change back into school clothes sit in squad line until the bell rings. 3. Respect for teachers, classmates, equipment and self is required 4. Students will be introduced to new games or skills. Everyone is on different levels. Bullying and humiliation, abuse or harassment will NOT be tolerated. 5. CELL PHONES- NO CELL PHONES IN CLASS! You must have it turned off in your locker or book bag during class. You are not allowed to have your phone in your pocket during class. If you do not wish to keep your cell phone in your locker during class you can place your phone that must be turned off in the plastic bin on your teacher’s cart. It will remain in the bin until class is over. 6. Do Not leave class without permission. You need to use the restroom BEFORE the start of class. No student will be allowed to use the restroom during class unless it is an emergency. 2 Classroom Management plan: Any misbehavior that occurs in class will result in the following actions: 1. Verbal Reprimand 2. Call to parent 3. After School Detention 4. Trip to office Proper Dress for Physical Education Physical education clothes need to be different from school clothes. Students must have a T-shirt. T-shirt includes sleeves and collar. No tank tops/low cut tops or v-necks. Stomach needs to be covered. You will be active and you want to be comfortable. Shoes must be tied so that the shoe will not fall off while walking or running. Students must have school appropriate athletic shorts or pants. Shorts must be mid thigh. All shoes must be lace up athletic shoes (no slip ons, flip flops, boots) All clothes need to be taken home on Friday or the last day of the week to be washed. Grading Students can earn up to 20 points for each full school day of the quarter. There will also be quizzes/tests/projects and homework or written assignments for student during the semester. Student’s daily grade: Active Participation 10pts (Standard 3- participates regularly in physical activity and standard 4-achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical activity) Dress- 10 pts. It is vital for students to change your clothes daily to prepare you to exercise and for hygiene purposes. (Dress cuts cannot be made up) Grades will be posted on progress book each week. If you have questions please don’t hesitate to talk to your teacher State Testing Every freshman will be required to complete the state testing requirements. These testing assignments are very important for your grade as well as data for the sate/ 3 The goals of the testing are to promote enjoyable regular physical activity and to provide a comprehensive physical fitness assessment and reporting program for children and youth. The Test is designed to evaluate and educate youth about the status of their physical fitness. After testing has been completed, the results will help students set goals and plan his/her personal fitness program. The FITNESS testing assessment measures aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. 1. Aerobic capacity- one mile run 2. Muscular strength and endurance- curl up trunk lift and push up 3. Flexibility- sit and reach 4. Body composition- body mass index Make Up Points for being absent This class is a participation based class. It is vital that you are at class everyday. If you miss a day because of being absent, you can make up that day as long as it is an excused absence. You cannot make up unexused absences or dress cuts. Make up days are usually done twice a 9 weeks. Once before interims reports and once before grade cards go home. It is the students responsibility to make up those days. 1. Jog 10 laps around the gym- 20 points or 2. Jog 1 laps around the track-20 points 3. Students must jog for makeup days or days will not be made up Emergency Procedures 1. Lockdown- All Physical education classes will go to the girls locker-room and sit down on the floor and remain quiet. 2. Fire drill- Student will exit through the closest door and meet their teacher in front of the outside weight room. 3. Tornado Drill- Students will go to the boys PE locker-room Parent Guardian/Non-Participation Notes Notes from your parent or guardian to be dismissed from physical activity will be good for only two (2) days. The note must include the following information: specific illness/physical impairment, date, child’s full name, parent/guardians phone number and parent/guardian signature. If your specific illness or physical impairment hinders you from participating for more than 2 days, you must present your teacher with a note from your doctor stating your illness or impairment and must include a release date. 4 Parents please complete and return this page.
