Catalyst

Catalyst
Every day when you come into
science class, you will have a
catalyst assignment to work on.
The catalyst prompt will usually be
projected onto the white board,
and your answer should be written
on the catalyst sheet that will be
kept in your binder.
Catalyst
1. What is the most fun
thing you did this
summer?
2. What is your art?
3. How long have you
been at ASA?
When you have fully answered these questions, label your file folder, with last name
first (ex. Davey, Annabelle).
On your piece of paper…
- Write your name on the paper, large enough
for people to read, but leaving enough room
for others to write around it
- Using as little tape as possible, tape the paper
to your back. Use a partner to help.
- You will have 5 minutes to walk around the
room, stopping those you run into,
introducing yourself, and writing something
positive you know about them or have noticed
about them on the paper on their back.

why? OR Who is your favorite scientist and why?
- You can use pictures (personal or not), words,
drawings, be creative!
- You may have to do some research
- Collage should be on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper

Scientist Activity
- If you don’t have the collage to turn in, you will need to turn
in a completed pink slip.
- With the person next to you, introduce yourself. Spell your
name for them, and use each letter in your name to describe
one of your personality traits.
- Share your scientist collage with your partner. Why did you
pick that scientist? How do you relate to them?
Activity: Science Puzzle
- Each piece that you receive represents current
scientific data
- Your goal is to arrange the data into a square.
Breaking News!!!
A new scientific discovery has just been made!
You must now somehow incorporate this
information into your puzzle!

Homework
Write Ms. Davey an e-mail (davey@goasa.org)
answering the following question:
How does the puzzle activity that we ended
class with today represent “doing science” in a
way that is similar to how your favorite
scientist “did science”?
Remember to format your e-mail in a way that is
appropriate for an e-mail to a teacher.
I must receive your e-mail before 7:45 AM
tomorrow morning in order for you to receive
credit.

Describe your goal for the 8th grade
year. This goal could be specific to
science, or it could be a general goal
that you have for all of your classes.
Room Scavenger Hunt
Goal: To revisit some information from the
Syllabus and the Homework Policy, and to
discover where everything is in the room.
Lawson Classroom Test of Scientific
Reasoning
- You will take this test in your science class
every year that you are a student at ASA
- Your score will not count towards your science
grade in any way
- Please use a pencil rather than a pen
- Try your best, and take your time to really
read through the questions and answer
- If you would like to know your score out of 24,
you may ask me next week

(Link is on website)
Read through the contract, print it, and then both you and
your parents need to sign it.
This will show me that you have a working printer at home.

Take the quiz at the end (Skip Login)
When you have passed the quiz “Print Certificate” and bring
it in to class. This will show me you passed the quiz, and
also show me that you have a working printer at home.

Look through the “Basic Daily
Rules” on pages 8 & 9 at the
beginning of your planner. Describe
which rule will be hardest for you to
follow this year and why. Then,
describe what you can do to make
sure you do not break this rule this
year.
