Warm Up
 With a partner, discuss the following questions
 When do you eat??
 Why do you eat??
Eating Habits
 Hunger- the body’s physical need for food
 Appetite- a desire for food because of your
environment and your thoughts
 Ex- when you smell freshly baked cookies. Your
body might not be hungry, but your appetite takes
over.
Healthful eating VS. Harmful eating
 Healthful eating habits- involve following the
dietary guidelines and eating an amount of food that
helps you maintain a healthful weight
 Harmful eating habits- involve eating for reasons
other than hunger and nutrition.
 Ex- eating too much, or eating the wrong kinds of
foods.
What would you do?
 You find yourself thinking about a fast food
restaurant because you saw an advertisement about
double burgers with bacon on TV
 It’s a hot, sticky day and you look in an ice cream
shop. You just ate a meal, but the double scoop with
chocolate syrup looks awesome!
 You are at a birthday party, and someone hands you
a big piece of cake covered with frosting. You know
that it will add a lot of sugar and calories to your
day’s diet.
Eating and emotions
 Emotions may lead people to eat when they are not
really hungry
 Emotions may also lead people to NOT eat when
they are hungry
 People may eat to cope with feelings such as: anxiety,
loneliness, or boredom
 Ex- Rachel is anxious after having an argument with
her friend. She eats a pint of ice cream to lift her
spirits.
