CHINESE PAPER LANTERNS
SYMBOLIZE LONG LIFE AND IS THE
SUPREME TOKEN OF GOOD LUCK.
GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES TO
CREATE YOUR OWN
CHINESE LANTERN
Use the ruler and make a straight line about 3/4"
away from one of the 8.5" long edges. Cut this
strip off and set it aside to be the lantern handle.
Next, fold the piece of paper in half,
lengthwise, making sure you line up all the
edges. Draw a line along the open, long edge,
of the paper, about 3/4" of an inch from the
edge.
Now, take your scissors and, starting at the folded edge, cut
a strip from the folded edge up to the line you drew. Make
the first strip about 3/4" away from one of the short edges
and continue to cut several strips along the piece of paper
like shown in the picture above.
Once all your strips are cut, you should unfold
your piece of paper and refold it lenghthwise
so the pencil mark will be hidden on the inside.
You can now color or embellish the outside of
the lantern.
To assemble the lantern simply roll the paper
into a tube shape as shown in the photo above
and staple the edges together.
Finally, using the strip you cut of the paper in
step 3, attach the handle by taping or stapling
the ends of the strip of the paper just inside the
top of the lantern.

Introduction
Thesis Statements
After you have brainstormed and you have some main
ideas of what you would like to write in your essay, you can
begin thinking about writing a thesis statement.
What’s a thesis
statement????
Definition
Thesis Statement
A thesis statement is a complete sentence
that contains one main idea. This idea controls
the content of the entire essay. A thesis
statement that contains subpoints also helps a
reader know how the essay will be organized.
Look at the introductory paragraph on the next slide.
See if you can identify the thesis statement and
subpoints.
Definition
Thesis Statement
When I was young, I always knew that I wanted to
become a teacher someday. When I played, I would
often gather my dolls together and pretend to teach them
how to do math problems or how to read a book. As I
grew older, my desire to become an English teacher
became clearer as I did some volunteer teaching overseas
and in the United States. As I look back on my reasons
for becoming a teacher, there are three reasons that
stand out. They are: my love for the English language,
my innate interest in how people learn, and my desire to
help other people .
The thesis statement
contains the main idea
that controls the content
of the essay.
Subpoints in the thesis
or nearby help the
reader know how the
essay will be organized
Key Features
Main Idea in a Complete Sentence
Since the thesis statement is the main
statement for the entire essay, it should express
a complete thought and be a complete sentence.
The thesis statement is asserting an opinion or
idea, so it should not be a question.
Key Features
Main Idea in a Complete Sentence
The sport of cross-country running.
This is not a complete
sentence.
The sport of cross-country running has allowed me
to get in better shape and meet some interesting
people.
Why do I want to be a teacher?
Thesis
Statement
This is a question, not a
statement.
Being a teacher is a great profession, because it
allows me to work with students and be
creative.
Thesis
Statement
HOW CAN YOU WRITE A GOOD
THESIS STATEMENT?
• Your first step, is to condense the assignment into a
specific question.
• Your thesis needs to show your conclusions about a
subject.
Please remember that strong thesis statements have
each of the following characteristics:
1. A strong thesis statement takes a stand.
2. A strong thesis statement makes people want to discuss it.
3. A strong thesis statement expresses one main idea.
4. A strong thesis statement is specific.
STRONG OR WEAK?
YOU DECIDE!
1. Integrity will allow you the courage to fight for what you believe is
true in the face of trials from the media, your coworkers, and
worst of all, those who would lay claim to your friendship.

2. Having integrity means standing up for what you believe in.
