To facilitate exploration of the person-centred perspective of the development of self- concept through conditions of worth On successful completion of the module students will be able to: 1 2 3 4 Content Discuss a range of personal, social, and cultural relationships in which the selfconcept develops Develop their self-awareness and explore the concept of the self-concept in relation to working with others Discuss the potential impact of personcentred counselling on negative conditions of worth Explore personal conditions of worth Introduction of a range of settings in which the self-concept develops including: The family Gender Age Sexual identity groups Cultural background Friendships Educational settings Work settings Differences between people, groups, and communities and their effect on individuals self-concept The aspect of person-centred theory that identifies conditions of worth as instrumental in the formation of the self- concept and the exploration of how the core conditions can dissolve conditions of worth and modify the self-concept This module expands the theory and practice of counselling into social life and provides a broader base for students` understanding of subsequent theoretical and skills modules Teaching and learning strategies Learning support The main theoretical content will be delivered through: Interactive lectures supported by small and large group discussion Individual and small group exploration of students` life experiences and knowledge in relation to the development of their self concepts Student led presentations in which small reflective groups present some aspect of personal, social, or cultural relationships influential in the development of the self concept.
