Quotes for Reflection
"Satan dreads nothing but prayer. Activities are multiplied that prayer may be ousted, and
organizations are increased that prayer may have no chance. The one concern of the devil is to
keep the saints from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work,
prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray."—
Samuel Chadwick
“Prayer does not fit us for the greater work, prayer is the greater work.”—Oswald Chambers
“When a Christian shuns fellowship with other Christians, the devil smiles. When he stops studying
the Bible, the devil laughs. When he stops praying, the devil shouts for joy.”—Corrie Ten Boom
“Faith in a prayer-hearing God will make a prayer-loving Christian.”—Andrew Murray
GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO WORSHIP
It is God Himself who calls His people to worship. We do not call ourselves, but it is the King who opens His
gates and beckons us into his courts.
Prelude
Introit—Jesus Shall Reign, Vs.2
2
Text: Isaac Watts, 1719; Music: DUKE STREET, John Hatton, 1793.
Call to Worship—Psalm 5: 1-3, 7-8, 11-12
Pastor:
Rejoice in the Lord. Sing for joy.
All:
Let all those who love the Lord exult in His Name.
Reader 1: Give ear to our words, O Lord; consider our meditation. Hearken unto the voice of our
cries,
O King, our God. O Lord, in the morning will we lift up our voices and unto You will we
look.
Reader 2: Lead us, O Lord, in your righteousness; through the abundance of Your steadfast love,
bring us into Your presence. Unto You do we pray.
All:
You spread Your protection over all those who love Your Name.
Pastor:
You bless Your covenant people, O Lord; You cover us with favor as with a shield.
Hymn of Praise—Come Thou Almighty King

Text: Anonymous, 1757; Music: TRINITY, Felice de Giardini, 1769.
GOD SPEAKS TO HIS PEOPLE THROUGH HIS WORD
The Bible is the means by which God graciously reveals Himself to His people—so we listen, read, and study with
expectant hearts. God particularly entreats us in His Word to sing Psalms. And while all Scripture is appropriate for
hymns and spiritual songs, there is a specific exhortation for us to make use of the Psalter as the Church’s songbook.
Scripture Song for August—Calm Content

MUSIC: CONTENT, Nathan C. George; TEXT: Based on P hil. 4:11, Vss. 1 and 2 based on a John Newton text, 1779,
Refrain and Vs. 3 by Nathan C. George, 2012.
Scripture Reading—2 Chronicles 7: 8-16
King Solomon held a feast for seven days, and all Israel with him. It was a very great assembly,
from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of Egypt. And on the eighth day they held a solemn assembly, for
they had kept the dedication of the altar in the Temple seven days and the feast seven days. On
the twenty-third day of the seventh month the king sent the people away to their homes, joyful and
glad of heart for the prosperity that the Lord had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his
people. Thus Solomon finished the house of the Lord and the king's house. All that Solomon had
planned to do in the house of the Lord and in his own house he successfully accomplished. Then
the Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: “I have heard your prayer and have
chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up the heavens so that there is
no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My
people who are called by My name humble themselves, and pray and seek My face and turn from
their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now
My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.”
Elder: This is the Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.
Hymn of Prayer—Psalm 5: Hear My Words
5
Text: Psalter 1912; Music: Gregory Wilbur, Adapted from Keine Schonheit hat die Welt by Johann Scheffler, 1657.
The Reading of the Word—Philippians 4:4-7
[4] Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. [5] Let your reasonableness be known to
everyone. The Lord is at hand; [6] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. [7] And the peace of
God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Pastor:
This is the Word of the Lord.
All:
Thanks be to God.

Sermon— Prayer Life

—Pastor, George Grant
GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO CONFESSION, REPENTANCE, AND RECONCILIATION
The People of God respond to His Word by confessing their sins, repenting of their sinful ways, and seeking
God’s favor through the reconciling work of Jesus, the Son of God.
Confession of Sin—Romans 3:10-12 and Psalm 25:1-2, 4-7
Pastor:
Lord, we confess that we have not sought after You. We have not found our solace
in You. We
have not been men and women of prayer. Indeed, we confess that we are all
sinners--there is
none among us who is righteous, no, not one of us.
All:
No one truly understands; no one seeks for You, O God. We all have turned aside;
together we have become foolish; no one genuinely does good, not even one
of us.
Pastor:
Make us to
All:
do
So to You, O Lord, do we now lift up our souls. O Lord God, in You do we trust.
know your ways, O Lord; teach us your paths.
Lead us in Your truth and teach us, for You are the God of our salvation; for You we
wait all the day long. Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love.
Pastor:
All:
remember
Incline our hearts toward You. Renew us in Your presence.
Remember not our sins and transgressions; according to Your steadfast love
us, for the sake of Your goodness, O Lord!
Assurance of Pardon—Psalm 25:8-10 and Philippians 3:9-10
Good and upright is the Lord. All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those
who keep His covenant and His testimonies. Therefore, we can now count everything as loss
because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord. For we do not have a
righteousness of our own that comes from the law. Rather, our righteousness is that which comes
7
through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; so now we may truly
know Him and the power of His resurrection.
Sung Response—God, Be Merciful to Me, Vs. 1
Text: Psalm 51, The Psalter, 1912; Music: REDHEAD, Richard Redhead, 1853.
HEAVENLY GIFT—EUCHARISTO
As God beckons His people to the bounty of His table, they make joyous profession of their fealty to Him.
Profession of Faith—The Apostles’ Creed
We believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit; The one holy Church—both visible and invisible;
The communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;
The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Sursum Corda

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession— The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

GOD SENDS HIS PEOPLE OUT
After calling His people into His presence, forgiving their sins, instructing them in His Word, and providing a foretaste
of the marriage supper of the Lamb, God sends His people into the world to show His light in the darkness.
Benediction— Ephesians 3:20-21
Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the
power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, forever and ever. Amen.
