TAC Meeting Report
• Concerns from SDM people with concessions made to
combine into the SciTech Forum. Does DETC see
pros/cons of this?
• No TAC funds for this fiscal year.
• Annual report due 1/31.
• Membership upgrades: Associate Fellows due Apr 15,
Fellows due Jun 15.
• Crichlow prize nomination due Mar 15.
16
TAC Meeting here at SciTech
• Multiple Documents

CADWG Report
1. Presentation by PointWise 'reliable CFD meshing'.
 Only meshing. Work with lots of native CAD. Block structure grids.
Unstructured grids. Overset meshes. Layered brick meshes.
2. Presentation Phoenix Integration, Andy Ko. Model based systems
engineering.
 There is a gap between systems engineering and engineering analysis.
Phoenix modelcenter is graphical/diagrammatical programming for otherwise
unconnected analysis tools. Solving can be network distributed and non
collocated.
 MBSE Pak ties MBSE architecture models with analytical (physics based)
models. Represents an engineering analysis as a SysML Parametrics
constraint block. When parametric block is run, modelcenter captures the
inputs, runs the analysis tools and return results as outputs of the block.
 Now SysML requirements can be tied to verification analyses.
18
 Demo showed MagicDraw (sysml authoring tool) running with ModelCenter.
Design, Build, Fly
• 17th year of the competition
• 2013 Fly-off held in Tucson, AZ and hosted by
Raytheon Missile Systems in April
• 90 entries, 81 report submittals (eligible for flyoff), 60 teams in attendance, 55 with a
successful flight attempt
19
DETC Newsletter
• Fall and Spring publications
 Fall (inputs due Sept 1?)
– After 3rd meeting in time for ASM distribution
– End of year “hi-lites”
 Spring (inputs due by Apr 1)
– Prior to SDM
– Emphasize paper sessions, DBF contest and for this
year’s spring edition, the Design Award winner
• Need inputs from S/C’s, SDM, DBF,
Membership, etc

DETC Design Guide 6th Edition
Here are the latest sales figures for the 6th edition
of the Design Guide.
• iOS App - (April 2013 - Nov. 2013)
 52 units sold (25 at Aviation 2013)
 1796 student member downloads (provided as a
benefit of student membership)
• Print Book (Oct. 2012 - 18 December 2013)
 162 units sold

Awards
• Design Engineering Award Nominations
 Will be awarded at SciTech to Michael Benjamin/GE
 We have a goal to get 6 quality nominations for the next
award
 Additional comments:
– The award recipient cannot have been a member of the TC for at
least two years
– We need to NOT rely on AIAA only to advertise and solicit
nominations for this award
– Create and post flyers at all conferences
– Send solicitation letter to engineering management of major
aerospace firms for nominations
