BACHELOR OF EDUCATION YUKON NATIVE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM ~ A FOUR-YEAR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM~ Application for Admission Application Deadline: April 1st, 2016 May 1st, 2016 - reviews are completed June 30th, 2016 - the waiting list will be opened up if there are vacant seats Late applications will be considered if there are vacant seats 1 WELCOME TO THE YUKON NATIVE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM Before you complete the application form please read the following: The Yukon Native Teacher Education Program (YNTEP) is designed to foster excellence in teacher education within the context of cross-cultural and Yukon First Nations’ perspectives for students of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal ancestry. YNTEP is a Bachelor of Education degree offered in partnership with the University of Regina. Graduates from the program qualify for both Saskatchewan and Yukon Teacher Certification for kindergarten to grade twelve. The program is intended for full time studies and is comprised of fall and winter semesters; a spring practicum placement in third year and a one-time summer cultural camp. The program is 120 credits and is normally completed within four years. Applicants must meet the entrance requirements from both partner institutions, Yukon College and the University of Regina. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Criterion 1: Grade 12 Graduation Grade 12 graduation with a 65% G.P.A. in required courses; and RCMP approved criminal record check English 12; Either Pre-Calculus 11 or 12 or Foundations of Math 12 or Apprenticeship & Workplace Math 12; and One approved Language or Social Science or Fine Arts course at the grade 12 level; plus One additional approved grade 12 academic level course Current high school students can provide an interim grade report and a schedule of current/planned courses by email, fax, or mail. Final transcripts must be official and therefore must be mailed. Send transcripts directly to the Admissions office. Criterion 2: Mature Student 21 years of age or older; and completed less than 24 credit hours of approved post-secondary coursework; If less than five years out of secondary schooling, must submit secondary transcripts; If more than five years out of secondary schooling; acceptable scores on the Language Proficiency Index test [LPI] or (min. B in ENGL 060) and; acceptable scores on Math Assessments or successful completion of Math 050 or equivalent RCMP approved criminal record check Criterion 3: Post-secondary Transfer Student Completed more than 24 credit hours of approved post-secondary coursework with a G.P.A. of 65% or better; RCMP approved criminal record check Note: All applicants must meet the University of Regina’s admission requirements to qualify for entrance into YNTEP. Applicants are required to submit at three (3) references in support of their application. The references must come from people who have known you for a significant period of time. References are not accepted from relatives and are to be submitted by your references directly to the Admissions office at Yukon College. Attached are some guidelines for writing references. i. One reference from a professional describing your capabilities as a student or an employee. ii. One personal reference from a close acquaintance of yours who can provide a character reference. iii. A letter from a First Nation educator or official supporting your aspirations to teach in a cross-cultural First Nations’ setting. iv. Provide a current resume that includes all relevant employment, community service & volunteer work, noting experience working with children and youth and highlighting any relevant work experience with First Nation children, youth, communities and governments. c. Official transcripts from your high school and all post-secondary educational institutions attended must be submitted. Official transcripts must be received in a sealed envelope, directly from the post-secondary institution and mailed to Yukon College, Admissions/Office of the Registrar (above address). d. A Personal Statement is an opportunity to demonstrate that you have given careful thought to your reasons for wanting a teacher education and a career in teaching. Your personal statement will be read only by the YNTEP faculty and selection committee. Please place your personal statement in a sealed envelope marked, “Personal Statement of (insert your name)”. Please address the following questions in your personal statement. (Max 1000 words) i. Why are you interested in a completing the YNTEP program? ii. What do you hope to do with your education? iii. What individuals, populations or situations might you find difficult to work with and why? Please provide at least two examples. iv. What experiences do you have in working directly with Aboriginal people and communities, and how will they contribute to your teacher education? v. A career in teaching can be very demanding. What supports might you need? Please be specific and detailed in your answer. 3) Criminal Records Clearance, including Vulnerable Sector Check a. Print and complete the following letter requesting a Criminal Records Check at https://www.yukoncollege.yk.ca/downloads/Criminal_Records_Check_Request.pdf b. Take 2 pieces of identification (one picture) to your local RCMP detachment c. Inform the RCMP representative that you need a criminal records check, with a vulnerable sector check, for entry into a Teacher Education Program (YNTEP). d. The person giving the letter of reference should include the following information: Name of the YNTEP applicant Name, address, e-mail and phone number of the person giving the reference Length of time that the reference has known the applicant Description of the capacity that the reference known the applicant and a description of the relationship The person giving the reference should write in some detail the applicant's qualifications to carry on studies in education, with the goal of becoming a teacher in a cross-cultural setting. An explanation as to whether or not the reference recommends the candidate for the degree program and a career in teaching. Signature of the person giving the reference 2.
