TWBI @ HPS Welcome and Introductions TWBI: What is it? • TWBI = Two Way Bilingual Immersion • Combines : Bilingual education model Foreign language immersion model • Delivers HPS core curriculum • Public school standards – no tuition TWBI: What is it? • Instruction through two languages ▫ Spanish ▫ English ▫ no translation/mixing • Spanish is used for a significant portion of the instructional day ▫ K & 1st = 90% in Spanish; 10% in English ▫ 2nd = 80% in Spanish; 20% in English ▫ Moving toward 50%/50% by 5th grade TWBI : What does it look like? • Approximately equal numbers of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers • Students are interacting in the same environment for all of the school day. • All students have the opportunity to model their native language as well as learn the second language.
