ACADEMICS
TIPS FOR BEING SUCCESSFUL AT RBMA
by Tonya Hicks-Brown, Principal
1. Be serious about your classes and grades. Good grades don’t fall out of the sky - you have to work at each class
daily. Reward yourself with TV, games, or Facebook time AFTER you’ve done your homework and projects.
a. Study skills (www.how-to-study.com)
b. Graduation requirements (see Guidance Counselor link under Student Life on the RBMA website
www.rbmaritime.org)
2. Think about your future…college, vocational school, apprenticeships, military. Where do you fit in? Where
can you go if you envision BIG goals and push yourself to achieve them?
a. Take a career interest survey (www.careercruising.com/ilp or www.myfuture.com)
b. Check out post-secondary institutions (www.FACTS.org or www.campustours.com/
3. Get involved…join a club, play sports, get involved in the many activities at RBMA
a. Get a club/activity list from the Student Services office
b. Seek opportunities to volunteer in our community (you’ll make valuable contacts, help yourself for
future scholarships, and look good to college admission officials!)
4. Get help or tutoring at the first sign of trouble!
a. Need tutoring? Please see the teacher that you need additional help from. Don’t wait – do it at the first
sign of trouble in the class! You may also see an administrator or talk to your parent about setting up extra
help.
b. Live homework help is available at www.pbclibrary.org/live-homework.htm. We also
recommend www.khanacademy.com for students to use at home. With a library of over 600 videos covering
everything from algebra to physics, finance and history and practice exercises, Khan Academy is on a mission
to help you learn what you want, when you want, at your own pace.
c. Seek out a counselor, teacher, or administrator if you need to get focused and motivated or you need to
solve a problem.
6. Be respectful of yourself and others. Know the rules and keep them – you’ll have a good reputation
stay out of trouble that way!!! 
and
7. Relax and have a great time at a great school with great opportunities for YOU – RBMA.
HONOR ROLL
Honor roll will be calculated at the end of each 9-week period. Students are eligible for the “A/B Honor Roll” if they
have all A’s and B’s in their classes and no less than a 3 in conduct. Students with straight A’s and no less than a 3 in
conduct are eligible for the “Straight A Honor Roll”.
Page 4
ACADEMIC OR BEHAVIORAL CONTRACT
Students are placed on “academic probation” when their GPA falls below 2.0 or when earning a D or F in a any quarter
or on mid-term or final exams. Any student who earns a D or F in any quarter or whose GPA drops below 2.0
will not be allowed to participate in club activities, fieldtrips or any other extra curricular activities until the
GPA or grades improve. In addition students who have a grade lower than a “C” in any class - including electives
- will be required to attend tutoring sessions on scheduled Fridays. Parents of students who are required to attend
school on Fridays will be responsible for transportation to and from RBMA and there will be no pick-up from TriRail. If the GPA or grades do not improve the student may be dismissed from RBMA and reassigned to his/her home
school. Refer to the Enrollment Agreement for additional information regarding tutoring and academic expectations.
Students will be placed on a behavioral contract as a direct result of multiple disciplinary infractions. Serious discipline
problems will result in immediate withdrawal from RBMA and the student will be reassigned to his/her home school.
For additional details please refer to the discipline and dismissal procedure on page 8.
INTEGRITY POLICY
Riviera Beach Maritime Academy is committed to excellence and we expect our students and staff to be responsible
for academic integrity. During tests, quizzes, mid-terms and final exams students are expected to do their own work.
Usage of the internet, cell phones, iPods or any other electronic devices, books and notes is prohibited. If a student is
caught using any unauthorized electronic device or cheats in any way on a test/exam/quiz, he/she will automatically
receive a zero and a referral will be written. Students are expected to complete assigned homework, essays and any
other teacher assignment on their own and by the due date. Students who engage in plagiarism are subject to
disciplinary action.
PROGRESS REPORTS AND REPORT CARDS
RBMA utilizes Engrade (www.Engrade.com) as its on-line grading and monitoring program. Student grades,
teacher information, and student assignments are all available on this site. Parents are REQUIRED to open a parent
account to monitor their student’s progress. Information on how to open an account will be available at new student
orientation and will also be available on the RBMA website (www.rbmaritime.org).
In lieu of a written progress report, parents are expected to check their student’s Engrade account on a regular basis
to monitor progress.
Report cards are mailed in accordance with the Palm Beach County School District calendar (please refer to the
calendar on page 1 for report card distribution dates).

Dual Enrollment and Early Admission are opportunities for students presently attending an accredited Palm Beach
County public or private high school or a home school education program to enroll tuition-free in courses offered by
Palm Beach State College while concurrently enrolled in high school. Students taking early admission and dual

regarding advisement session dates, registration deadlines and other updated information pertaining to early admission
or dual enrollment, visit www.palmbeachstate.edu/DualEnroll or review the PBSC Handbook. Studnets who have
completed their Freshman year and meet all PBSC entrance requirements (GPA and Test Scores) are eligible to
participate. Please request an RBMA Dual Enrollment Handbook from Ms. Bonikowski if interested. Guidance
approval is required for all students taking Dual Enrollment classes each semester.
BULLYING
The Palm Beach County School District takes bullying seriously and Riviera Beach Maritime Academy has a zero
tolerance policy and will strictly adhere to the PBCSD anti-bullying policy. Please see
www.palmbeachschools.org/policies for detailed information or refer to the PBCSD Student & Family Handbook.
DISCIPLINE AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURE
The Riviera Beach Maritime Academy will adhere to Palm Beach County School District’s Code of Conduct
www.palmbeachschools.org/policies. In addition the Riviera Beach Maritime Academy will follow the outlined
process in dealing with Disruptive Student Behavior.
Positive and productive classroom and shop behavior is essential in the learning process for all students. Disruptive
behavior will not be tolerated. Students who engage in disruptive behavior can expect the following consequences:
1.
Verbal warning by teacher or administrator.
2.
A demerit from the teacher or administrative staff member at the school.
3.
If disruptive behavior is displayed the student will be removed from class and a referral will be written. If the
behavior is deemed severe enough, the student may receive either an in-school suspension or out-of-school
suspension.
4.
If disruptive behavior continues a conference between the student and teacher is held and/or a call is placed
to the parent/guardian and the parent/guardian is advised of the consequence(s).
5.
A behavioral contract may be developed and signed by both parent/guardian to curtail further incidents.
6.
Should the student be unable to follow the guidelines established in the behavioral contract, the student may
be dismissed from the school and returned to his/her resident school.
7.
Accumulation of three (3) demerits for non-compliance with school rules/policies or procedures will result
in a one-week lunch detention. Detentions that are not served will result in an in-school suspension to be
served on an assigned Friday.
Page 9
Severe infractions to the School Rules will result in immediate dismissal from RBMA. Such infractions may include
but are not limited to:
Vandalism/Theft
Buying/Selling Drugs
Possession of Weapons
Buying/Selling Alcohol
Possession of Explosives
Buying/Selling Tobacco
Repetitive Bullying
Repetitive Harassment
Computer Piracy or Misuse/Abuse of Computer or
Electronic Media Privileges
Possession/Use of Drugs/Paraphernalia
Possession/Use of Alcohol or Tobacco
Buying/Selling Drug Paraphernalia
Assault/Battery upon a Student
Assault/Battery upon a Teacher or member of the
professional staff
Repetitive disruptive and/or unacceptable behavior(s) in violation of either Palm Beach County School District or
RBMA Policies which have resulted in either multiple detentions or suspensions will result in dismissal from RBMA.
TARDY POLICY
Students will receive a demerit for arriving at school or class after the tardy bell has rung (second bell). Students are
not allowed go directly to class but are to report to the front office and ask for a pass to enter class if they are tardy.
Accumulation of 3 unexcused tardies will result in a one week lunch detention. Students who arrive 20 minutes
after the start of class will be marked absent for that class.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Students at Riviera Beach Maritime Academy are expected to perform at the maximum level of their capabilities in
their academic classes as well as their elective classes. School attendance is the direct responsibility of
parents/guardians and students.
RBMA is on a 4-day school week schedule. All students are REQUIRED to attend school daily and be on time for
classes in order to benefit from the instructional program and develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline and
responsibility.
Instructors will see each student in their classroom only twice a week (approximately only 18 times in a marking
period). Thus, students are allowed to miss only 2 days of classes in a quarter (9 week period). Doctors’
appointments, interviews, etc. must be scheduled on Fridays or after school hours.
If a student misses more than 2 classes in a quarter he/she MUST PASS the course’s semester exam to show mastery
of the subject to receive credit for the class. Students who exceed 2 absences in classes must make-up contact
hours on a Friday to receive credit for the course. Excessive absences will lead to the student being withdrawn
from our program and reassigned to their home school.
Excusing absence procedure: A phone call must be made to school to advise administration of the absence.
Parent/Guardian must submit a note to the school explaining the absence. Absence will not be excused unless
a note has been sent to school.
EARLY DISMISSAL
A student will face disciplinary action for leaving school without following proper check-out procedure:
1.
Bring a written note from the parent/guardian to Student Services for permission to leave. The note should
have the following information: Student name, grade, student number, time and reason for the request, a
day time phone number and a parent/guardian signature and date.
2.
Prior to student leaving, he/she must present the early release note or form to their classroom teacher.
3.
The note should be presented to the front office and student must wait for parent sign-out.
4.
Parents/guardians must physically appear at the front desk to sign student out. Students who drive to school
will have their early release note verified by a call to the parent/guardian.
5.
Students will not be released to persons other than parents/guardians or emergency contact unless a written
note from a parent/guardian is provided and identity has been established.
6.
Identification will be required before a student can be released.
MAKE UP WORK
Students are responsible for completing all assignments or tests in a timely manner. Students will be afforded the
opportunity to make up work for absences, including semester exams, as outlined in the School District’s Student
Progression Plan. RBMA students must adhere to each teacher’s make-up work policy as outlined in the class
syllabus. If a student misses any final exam he/she will have one week from the last day of school to make up any and
all missed exams (June 9, 2016).
LATE WORK
Late work is defined as work that is not turned in on the due date. This does not apply to work not turned in due to
an absence (see make up work, above). Late work acceptance by teachers is governed by the respective teacher’s
syllabus. Be sure you understand each teacher’s policy regarding late work by carefully reading their syllabus.
