Jupiter By: Cierra Yoshikawa & Kristel Curameng MAIN FACTS • 5th planet from Sun • Largest planet in solar system – More than 1 thousand Earths could fit • 62 known moons – 4 largest: Callisto, Europa, Ganymede and Io – Named after GalileoMORE FACTS MORE FACTS • Takes 12yrs to orbit the sun • Rotates in 10 hrs • Mass of 1.9 x 10^27 – 318 times mass of Earth • Surface temp: 185.8 F (152 K) Juptier’s Statistics Jupiters Rotation • Jupiter has the fastest rotation of all the planets in the Solar System, completing one rotation on its axis every 9.9 hours • Due to its rapid rotation it causes the planet‘s equator to bulge out. Jupiters Layers • The gases which Jupiter is mostly made of change to liquid inside Jupiter • The first liquid layer inside Jupiter is the liquid hydrogen layer. Under the liquid hydrogen layer is a liquid metallic hydrogen layer. • At the deepest part of Jupiter is the core. Atmosphere • Atmosphere: – Mainly hydrogen and helium, small amounts of methane, ammonia, water vapor and other compounds. – Powerful winds dominate the atmosphere with criss-crossing jet streams, lightning and huge hurricanelike storms like the Great Red Spot. Weather • Colorful latitudinal bands, atmospheric clouds and storms illustrates dynamic weather • White "zones" are higher and cooler. • Dark "bands" are lower and warmer. • Cloud pattern changes within hrs or days Great Red Spot • Great Red Spot and its surroundings was obtained by Voyager 1 on Feb. 25, 1979, when the spacecraft was 9.2 million kilometers (5.7 million miles) from Jupiter. • This is a huge, high storm that has been swirling around Jupiter for hundreds of years. It’s easily visible from telescopes here on Earth, and even in larger backyard telescopes. Jupiter’s Rings • Has a faint ring, invisible from Earth • Composed of inner halo, main ring, Gossamer rings – Composed of dust particles Work Cited • http://www.solarviews.com/eng/jupiter.htm • http://nineplanets.org/jupiter.html • http://www.kidscosmos.org/kidstuff/jupiter-facts.html • http://www.buzzle.com/articles/jupiterfacts.html
